OCEAN MESSAGE.
£By Telojrapli.—Special Oorrespond«nt.l ( Auckland, October 28. This .morning an interesting document reached Mr. C. Kalnan, manager of the Central Hotel, Auckland. Eighteen months ago, while at sea en route to the Old Country, Mr. Kalnan threw overboard a sealed bottle, containing tho following note: — ';"Gneisenau, April 20, 1912,—This was thrown overboard 880 miles out from Fremantle, -IV.A. All.'well. Finder please state when and where picked up, and post address to Manager, Central Hotel, Auckland. New Zealand. Thanks in anticipation." • ■ This morning Mr. Kalnan had reditu mod to him a stained and almost ' [yellow note, with here and there a Word that had faded out. It was covtered by tho following note: —''This document was found by the Mtidir of Nikonumbi, Province of Lanaland, British East Africa, in Lat. 2deg. 20see. and I<ong. 40deg. 40 East, on August E6, 1913. It had been damaged by /water ■ as ' you will ' see. Observe that tho name of tho sender has been obliterated.— (Signed) A. L. Riddle, Provincial JCoramissioner, 'E.A.P." Mr. Kalnan feels pleased at getting his message back after its long 16 months' journey, for, at tho time of throwing the bottle overboard, ho was informed by tho officers that not one such message in "a thousand ever reached the snore, the bottles generally being smashed to pieces on somo rock-bound coast.
