WIRELESS FOR TRAINS.

—■—^ —-— Mr. Christoph Wirth, of Nuruberg, who but a short time ago demonstrated the operation of a boat steered by wireloss telegraphy, has invented a wireless railway signal apparatus, whereby accidents may be entirely obviated. The receiving apparatus must be installed oil the train, the luggage van being excellently adapted for the purpose. Tiro pressure of a button, or tho turn of a crank suffices for sending a inossago from any station or special dispatching station erected along tho line. A sage may be convoyed to the enginedriver, warning him of danger, or,' should the danger be imminent, tho Westinghouse brako may be applied by the agency of wireless, without- the medium of the engine-driver. In fact even the steam may be cut off. so that the train stops of itself. The train may bo brought to a complete standstill in 27 seconds, there being 110 jolt. Should circumstances require it may be effected more swiftly. The telephone or telegraph wires along the lino act as file aniennae, without this in tho least interfering with the regular telephone or telegraph service. It would bo advisable to establish transmitting stations every 80 or 100 kilometres. Tho apparatus is relatively cheap to manufacture, tho requisite number for a svhole train hardly costing any more than a singlo Westinghouse brake, rhere is every probability,' therefore,' that the invention will not- have to wait long for the railway authorities to idopt it. In fact, tho Bavarian Minister of Traffic lias already entered into negotiation, and a trial is now being made along the lino of Nuremberg- ' 3rasenberg.
