LETTERS TO THE EDITOR.
di fo WHY THEY STRUCK. ly tr pc or (To tho Editor.) 6 j: Sir, —In tho tornado of talk that is oing_ reported from day to day, I ain ! opinion that the misled strikers aro Ai ideavouring to obscure tho weakness ne : tho causq they had for taking tho vi ;tromo aetion they did with. such m; ttle consideration. Two salient points » •e being clouded out by the hot-air >n sudors (imported and indigenous) liich should be kept steadily in view. m J ho ono is' that on the morning of tho stop work" meeting (Wednesday last) io employers wore notified bv Sir. 0. j.j arland that they would bo.ablo to on- -p; igo labour between 7.45 a.m. and 8 m
a.m. for work after tho meeting, The employers, accopting the union secretary's word, sent their foreman to engage that labour, but in answer to tho usual demand at the usual place there was absolutely no response. Tho second point, which bears on tho first, but tfhich I am afraid is being obscured by cuttle-fish tactics, is that tlio men who did work while the "stop work" meeting was in progress are fellow unionists of those who attended the union, and in any case had as much right to bo employed then and there or at any time as the men who missed the bus bv attending the fateful meeting of Wednesday last. This, everyone must admit, weakens tho caso of the strikers to a thread, for on tho' admission of Sir. Young at tho Basin Reserve on Sunday, it was not decided to strike at the meeting, nor was it on account of the scapogoat shipwrights' grievances, but it was owing to the fact that certain unionists found their jobs jumped by other unionists, during the time . tlx© latter were extending their legs to tiio agitatiug pullers of them.-—I am, etc., UNIONIST.
