POST OFFICE & P.O. BANK.
{ ■ ' * : ' ' EXCESS OF QUARTER'S DEPOSITS | ' NEARLY £29,000. I n R- II Bhodes, Postmaster* I Goiwral, in rosponso to an inquiry, by > a reporter yesterday, made a brief i statement reviewing tlie returns of tho i Post' and Telegraph Department foi I tho past quarter. "Tlie revonue," iio said, " shows » . satisfactory increaso in respect of alt , classes of business, especially in the . sale of postal stomps. The total amount s collected is £2i5,476, an increase •of , £14,955 over tho corresponding quarter , of last year. A very satisfactory foat two of tho returns is tlie fact that ■ an excess of savings-bank deposits over withdrawals of £25,985 takes the place • of an excess of withdrawals of £4.6,793 . iii tho September quarter <rf 1012 ; — a net gain of £75,763. Tho amount of deposits .increased, wlrilo tho amount of Withdrawals ivas considerably less. Tho 1 money-order and .postal-note business shows ft steady advance, both in volume and amount, a clear indication of in- ' ■creasing commercial activity.- Tlionumi' ber of telegrams dealt .with.' exceeded those of tlie Septembor quarter, 1912, by over one hundred thousand (117,015). There is a, decided .tendency for ths bureau messages to increase at . the expense of ordinary telegrams, but so long as the total business increases there need ba no cause for alarm. Thff public clearly favours the newer methoq of transmission rather than' the old, Six months of the year Jiavo now claps* cd, aild the total revenue has £692,013, with the two best business) quarters yet to oomo. Last year, for: the same poriod. tlie reveiuir, was £5§2 j <; 011, and for the half-year t-110 ,inorea6<s' is tlitis £40,002."
