LABOUR DAY LOCALLY, . PROCEEDINGS QUIET. The observance* of Labour Day in iTVollinrfon is not marked by those special celebrationß wTiich in somo other .centres ' dharacterise the day as the " workers' own holiday." There is no organised trades procession through the streets of the city, no blaring of brass bands, ino display of union bannors. So far as the olficial labour organisations woto concerned, tho celebration in Wellington yesterday was confined to ft picnic at Day's Bay. Somo 2500 people attended, and a programme of sports events was carried out, consisting chiefly of short races for men of various oges, together with girls' and women's races, and a baby show. The Waterside Workers' Brass. Band, and the Wellington Pipo Banl wero in attendance, and there were numerous sideshows. There wero several other attractions. The races at Trentham arid tho Pageant at Newtown Park both attracted large i gatherings, whilo tho matinee perform- ■! the various picture theatres 1 wore also well patronised. ' The Eailwoy'Department booked 6400 passengers, aoout tiio same number as fast year. Tho tramways wero . also well patronised. Yesterday was' tho first-occasion on Which, theEastbounie Borough Council ran a holiday service on its newly organised ferry service. The Tesults wero satisfactory, half-hour trips being run by tho Duc'hess and Oobar without 'hitch. Some 2900 passengers travelled between Wellington and Day's Bay and Rona Bay ana back, during the day, without the slightest confusion. The principle of collecting all tickots nt tho City end worked admirably. Tho general conduct of tho service, reflected great credit on tho new system of management. In tho evening a "social" gathering was held in Esperanto Hall, under the auspices of the Social Democratic party, and tho Housewives Union. There wa3 an entertainment programme and dancing, and tho attendance was large; CELEBRATIONS EL6EWHERE. Chrlstchuroh, October 27. The weather was hot, but -windy, for the holiday to-day. All tho outdoor excursions and attractions were largely patronised. : (By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) . Napier, October 27. 'About 8000 br 9000 pcoplo attended the Labour Day picnio and sports at Farndon Park to-day. Tho procession 1 of trade exhibits prior to; the picnio was the best ever seen in Napier. Prizes' for the best working exhibit • wero won by:—Railway Servants, 1; 1 Plumbors' Union, 2.... • ' Wanganul, October 27. A high wind blow all day, but the weather was bright and sunny for Labour Day, which was observed as a general holiday. Large numbers went to tho Waverley races, and all picnio resorts wore well • patronised, while there was a very big attendance at tho Labour Day sports in Cook Gardens. , The sports were excellently conducted, and'the military events very_ popular, ; teams being present from various places between Hawera and', Palmerston and 1 along the Main Trunk line. The prizes wero fairly well divided between them.
