SPRING MEETING.
HYMETTIUS WINS WELLESLEY
STAKES:
HANDICAP GOES TO LORD RENOWN.
A.RACEHORSE KILLED.
Friday's brilliant sunshine, combined . !ffith the gale which followed that night, had the effect of drying the grounds
and racing track at Trentham, and, as the weather, was half- line on Saturday, the Wellington. Racing 'Club's Spring meeting was commenced under very favourable conditions. In the morning the outlook was not over-promising, but, notwithstanding this and the counterattractions, the attendance was all that could be desired. Among those present were' His Excellency the Governor (the Earl of Liverpool) and party, the president of the Racing Conference (Sir Geo. Clifford), the Hon. W r . H. Herr.ies, and leading sportsmen from all parts of the Dominion. After Thursday's downpour, it was only to be expected that the track would be a trifle slow, but the going was quite good. Largo fields wero the order —the minium being nine and the maximum 19 horses in one raoe. One ro- , ~ pult of this was a' good deal of crowding and bumping, especially i® the short races, and some accidents occurred. In the Steeplechaso, Maia was crowded out at the first fence, and he fell and broke his back, but fortunately his rider was not seriously hurt. In. the Shorts Handicap there was a great rush for places os the horses came on to the course proper, and Bandiera was jammed on to . the fence. The accident robbed him of Victory. A similar sort of scramble occurred in the Final Scurry, when horses closed in oil either side of Day Fly and lifted his rider (W. Ryan) clean out or the saddle. The horseman was stunned, for a few minutes, but othorwise escaped with a few cuts and bruises. He was brought in on the club's motor-car. Apart from these happenings the racing left little to be desired, and though the stipendiary stewards asked questions T)f jockeys in one or two instances it appears that they did not consider it necessary to call the club's stewards to- ' pother in any instance. Several close finishes occurred, notably that in the Wellington Handicap, when Lord Renown got homo ahead of several candi'dates who were more heavily supported. In the Wellesley Stakes, Hymettius caused a big surprise when he galloped in at the head of the dozen 1 .two-year-olds. Several other "outsiders ' also prevailed during the afternoon, a fact which probably accounts for the totalisator investments: not having reached, n greater total than £25,612. They are, however, nearly three times as great as the ■, investments on the first day last year,, when a terrific storm swept the course and had the effect of reducing the figures to £9806. _ , . It was noticed during the day that the' club had a motor-car 1 travelling round tho sand track. It was for the use of the stewards, some of whom were present at tho start of everv. race. -It n.lso did duty as nil nmbul.incc the last race, when W. Ryan was motored back to the enclosure from .where he had the fall off Day Fly. Details. of the racing are as follow: — RIMUTAKA HANDICAP, of 140 bovs. ! second liorso to receive 30 sovs., and third horse 15 sovs. from the stakeSeven furlongs.
