HINT FROM HIE PRIME MINISTER

:. The foregoing • brief statement was made by tho Prime Minister (tho Hon/ W. F. Massoy) in reply to a general inquiry by a Dominion reporter as to what tho Government were'doing. More than this he would not say. Referring to tho statement made that ho had interested himself in the negotiations for T/he settlement of tho dispute, Mr. Massev informed a reporter yesterday that all that ho had done up till the present waß t-o send a letter to tho _ president of tvhe Shipowners' Federation and the president of tho Waterside Workers' Union making tho following offer;— "I shall ho very glad L to take part in any eonfereilco which may be arranged with the object of drawing up a new agreement as between the shipowners 5 on'.the one side and the waterside workers o.ti the other." To that, letter 'he had received., verbal replies by telephone merely acknowledging tho' receipt of the letter in tho meantime. , PICTON EXCURSION CANCELLED. The Union Steam Ship ■ Company advises that tho Waliino s excursion to ricto.li to'day (Labour Day) has been definite]}; abandoned. • '
