LATE DR. M'ARTHUR, S.M.
• AN IMPRESSIVE FUNERAL, The funeral of the late Dr. A. M'Ar- i thur, S.M., which took place, on Saturday morning, was most impressive. It was attended by many of Wellington's, most prominent citizens, representing every .class of the community. Before .tho funeral left the Occidental Hotel, at which Dr. M'Arthur had resided, a short service was conducted by the Rev. J. Oribson Smith, of whose church (St. - 'Andrew's) Dr. M'Arthur was a mem-' ibor. , Tho service was attended by the deceased gentleman's intimate friends, representative citizens, and his brother-in-law, Mr. John M'Arthur. Amongst tho ladies present were two sisters of the deceased,. Mrs. Hyde and Mrs. M'Arthur, also Mrs. and Miss Seddon. 'lie start of, the funeral procession i was- witnessed by a largo crowd, who 1 had- gatliercd to pay a ■ last tribute of respect to one who was recognised to be the friend of all. The pall-bearers were four membors of the Magistrate's Court staff —Messrs. ,A. H. Holmes (Clerk of : the .Court), J. H. Carrad, W. J. Buckley,'and F. G. Hutton. \ There was a , long procession r of carriages behind the ifiiearso, and many citizens followed on .Soot. This section of the procession included a large deputation of waterside ! workers, headed by .their presidont and [treasurer. They attended, they said, [to mark their regret at the passing of a ttruo friend of .the workers. ' ( Amongst tho prominent citizens present at the funeral wero: The Hon. A. 1 ,L. Herdman (Attorney-General), the jHon. H. D. Bell, K.C. (Minister, for 1 (Internal Affairs), Sir Joseph Ward. Sir John Findlay, K.C., the Hon. C. H. Mills, M.L.C., Mr. D, H.Guthrie, ■M.P., the Hon. T.. W. Hislop, the •Mayor of Wellington (Mr_ J. P. Luke), Mr. W. G. Riddoll, S.M., My. L. GReid, S.M. (of Masterton), Mr. D. G. iA. Cooper (Registrar of the Supreme Court at Wellington), His Grace the (Archbishop of Wellington (Dr. O'Shoa), the Rev. Fatlier Hickso'n, Messrs. A. Gray, K.C., C. B. Morison, K.C., and numerous other members of tho Wei- i ilington Law Society; Messrs. H. H. Ostler and P. S. K. Macassey, of the Crown Law Office; Mr. J. W. Macdoniald, solicitor to the 1 Public Trust Office; and representatives of nearly all tho (Departments of the Civil Service, also of tho Civil Service Club, of which Dr. M'Arthur had been a most popular president Officers of the police force present were: Commissioner Cullen, Superintendent Ellison, Inspector Hend■Tey, Sub-Inspector Shoehan, and Chief 'Detectivo Broberg. There wero also .present members of tho Licensing Bench, representatives of the rrfilway servants and tramwaymeu (of whoso appeal boards Dr, M'Arthur had been president), Justices of tho Peaco, Prisoners' Aid Society, Missions to Sea- , men, and numerous others. , Wreatlisjworo forwarded by Sir Wil- : Jiam Hall-Jones, Mrs. Seddon, Mrs. T. j C.
