THE DEAN AND THE DOCTORS.
Sir, —I must apologise for again asking for a little space in your columns, but reference to my last letter and that of "Halt and Lamo" will show that my statements havo been misrepresented. _ There is littlo to be gained by arguing with anyone who shows' such bias as does "Halt and Lame." My contention was that it is no now thing to find the Church opposing medical and scientific progress, a statement that can, he supported by many facts. As far as my experience goes, it is rare at. tho present day to find such opposition, at least from the better educated of the clergy. Presuming that Lord Macaulay had an ''unbiased mind," I bog .leavo to make the following quotation in support of my contention"From the time when the- barbarians overran the Western Empire to the tiroa of the revival of' letters, tho influence of tho Church of Homo had been generally favourable to scionco, to civilisation, and to good government, i But, during the last three centuries, to stiuifc tho frowth of the human mind has boen ex chief object. Christendom, whatever advance has been mado in knowledge, in freedom, in wealth, and in the arts of life, has been mado in spite of her, and has_ everywhere been in- inverse proportion to her power." (Macaulay's "History of England," 1889 ed ; , chap. I, p. 24.) Adieu, Mr. Editor, with thanks for the space. —I am, eto., LAPIDATOR.
