DISAPPEARANCE ON MQNOWAI. An inquest was conducted by Mr. W, G. Riddcll, S.M., Coroner, yesterday morning regarding tho disappearance of John M'Kechnie, an able seaman, from the steamer Monowai, on its voyage, on October 16, from Lyttclton to Wellington. Evidence was given by John Scott, chief officer, to the cffect that on the morning of the mishap, shortly after 4 o'clock, deceased had brought him a cup of tea. Witness had last seen him at 4.20 a.m., when he carried tho dishes down from tho bridge. Tho weather was calm at tho time, and tho vessel was not pitching in such a way as to bo likely to causo a fall overboard. Martin Edwardson, able seaman, last saw deceased at twenty minutes to 5 a.m., and ho was then taking some cups to tho pantry! M'Kechnie was supposed to commence work a£ 6 a.m., hut could not bo found tlien. He know of nothing that would be likely, to causo deceased to go overboard. Evidence was also given by Horace. | Wliito Parsons, and a relative of dc- I ceased, named Hugh M'Kechnio. The | latter stated that he had never noticed I anything peculiar about deceased.
