POLICE REINFORCEMENTS.
TO PROTECT WORKERS. SPECIAL CONSTABLES MAY BE SWORN. The Minister of Justice, (the Hon. A. L. Herdman) mad© a brief Btatcmest to a reporter last evening as to what he intended to do in the matter of affording extra polioo protection on tho wharves.
"Every precaution is being taken," he said, "to protect people going about their business, and arrangements have been made already this afternoon _to provide for reinforcements of police. Men *rcll arrive in the city from different parts of the country immediately. Down at the gates of the wharves tomorrow traffic will bo properly controlled and rogulated by tho polioe, and as far as it lies in their power they will permit only persons having business on the wharves to go on. If the trouble assumes a graver aspect, and it is found that tho police force available is not adequate to guard, people who havo business to transact upon tho wharves, the extreme step of swearingin special constables will bo taken. It is to be hoped, however, that this courso will not bo necessary. I have seen the Commissioner of Police this afternoon and to-night, and I have given him instructions as to tho course that he is to take."
