CHINESE MEN.

THE CASE OF S.S. NORTHERN. The A. and A. Lino's steamer Northern recommenced tlio work of discharging her New York cargo shortly after 1 p.m. yosterday. During the morning' there was a hint of trouble, and it was thought that if it wps allowed to develop serious consequences might have occurred. Tho crew of the vessel, assisted by some free labourers manned the holds. It seems that, included among tho crew of tho Northern, are a number of Chinese, and it was the intention of the owners to use them for working cargo. It was quito evident that tho action of the owners in bringing in foreign free' labour of this class would perhaps causo trouble. A conference' was held between the agents for the vessel, Captain Roberts (her commander), and Mr. Fletcher, at wh'ch Captain Roberts gave' his word that all tho work would be done by white free labour, and 110 Chinese would bo employed on tho cargo. "It might have been that an international question'might have been raised," said ono of the interested parties, jokingly. Work on the Northern was commenced forthwith, and continued throughout the day. Afterwards a report was circulated to the effect that Chinese was working the holds. On investigation being madß it was found that the rumour was without foundation.
