During an exploration by twenty leading officials at Senghenydd mine, the rearmost of the party were suddenly overcome.by fumes. Three messengers wero successively sent to Warn those in front-, but none returned. The gas intoxicated some, and finally all wero overcome. A rescue brigade was summoned. It exhausted its supply of oxygen in resuscitating those who had collapsed. Eventually all were brought to the surface, several being in a critical condition. Other rescuers, after getting withinj thirty yards of the face, were drivoii back by tlio gas. They saw maaiy bodies terribly shattered. Tho advanco in another portion of tho mine was impeded by heavy falls from tho roof, i Tho rescuers were within thirty yards of tho coal face. They found a large number of bodies, some decapitated and dismembered, Further operations have been postponed till Friday owing to the danger from tho gas. The relief funds now - stand .at £30,000. Town Crier was dispatched to warn the men not to go down onto the mino. AS a result, 1500 men are idle. DISASTER IN NEW MEXICO. 1 OVER 200 MINERS ENTOMBED. (R-ec. Octobcr 23, 11.55 p.m.) Now York, October 23. 'An explosion wrecked the Stag Canon Fuel Company's mino, in Now Mexico, entombing 280 miners. Five havo been roscued. The fate of. tho others is doubtful. Debris blocks the mino shaft, but it is 'believed that it is possible that tho entombed . men • have reached tho connecting shaft to the other mine.
