SUPERB ETCHINGS.
Q — Rarely if ever before has Wellington had tlio opportunity of viewing and purchasing etchings of such genuine worth as thoso at present on view at Messrs. W. H. Turhbull'and Co.'s gallery, to be sold by auction at 4 p.m. on Thursday. Thoy includo a rare collection of original etchings by Rembrandt, tho liko of which havo never beon exhibited south of tho Line—superb in their drawing and feeling, and showing in perfection tho master, hand of ono of tho greatest artists tlio world has known. Theso includo such masterly works a's_ "Tho Descent," "Thp Death of tho Virgin," "Tho' Crucifixion," "Tlio Flight Into Egypt)" and "Strolling Musicians," among many other gems of tho etcher's art. But Rembrandt is not tho only groat otclier represented. . Thero are glorious examples of th® delicately beautiful work of Claude Lorraine, rich in atmospheric effects; somo very fine examples of Albrecht Durer's vahiablo works, some exquisite masterpieces by George Morland and Hogarth. A notably fino etching of Frank Brangwyn, A.R.A., also illuminates tho walls of tho gallery. It is a sterling example of tho host of this artist's work, and ono which must increase in value as years go on. Sir F. Seymour Haden Jacomb Hood, R.E., A. Lcgros, Birkett Foster, Hugh Paton, nnd Sir Joshua Reynolds are all represented in this collection. Tho genuineness of theso originals is absolutely guaranteed. Among tlio visitors to the studio yesterday was Mr. W. F. Collev, tho English artist, who expressed his intense admiration of tho works shown and his astonishment that thoy should havo beon allowed to leavo. England. Tlio collection nlso includes a capital lot of oil and water-colours by artists now to Wellington, but of established reputation in tho Old Country. Among theso aro Hugh Nisbett, Frank Lcwin, E.R.A., A. D. Corto Svatck, Van Ry.ll, F. J. Aldridgc, M. Stannard, Norli, J. L. Balfour, E. Fi-istrom, B. Fletcher, and W. M. Gibbs. Such a collcction of pictures and • etchings should attract considerable attention from art-lovors.
