DEFENCE MATTERS.
Tho annual meoting of the Wellington h Rifle Association is to bo held at the J Garrison Hall, Buckle Street, this p evening. Tho report states that the tJanuary meeting was a complete success v in spito of wot weather, no fewer than fi 170 competitors entering. This was h tho largest meeting in the Dominion, v excopt the Now Zealand championship o meeting held in March. 6 Tho annual gathering of the officers 8 aSid men who comprised New Zealand's First Contingent, which sailed from "Wellington on Saturday, October 21, 1899, is to be hold to-morrow. Mr. D. A. Kenny has charge pf the musical arrangements, and it is expected that both islands of tho Dominion will bo r well represented. n A school of instruction in musketry e for Territorial and Senior Cadet officers „ and N-C.O.'s was held at the Garrison Hall, Buckle Street, during tho last „ week, Lieutenant Rose, N.Z.S.C., the n district musketry instructors, being in charge, whilst tho instructors of the 0 Permanent Force (N.Z. Staff Corps) as- n sisted throughout the course. Be- c tween eighty and ninety attended each \ evening, and the school finished on Fri- j day evening, when the course laid down „ for this year was fired in tho form of f a competition:—Ono officer and ono_ noncommissioned officer of the Territorial versus one each of the Senior Cadets. The winner was Captain R. W. "Wilkinson (sth Regiment), Colour-Sergeant Ashton (Senior Cadets) being second. Lieutenant Rose will conduct a similar course at other centres. _ I Particulars of instruction camps to v be held during the next six months aro t given in the current battalion orders is- l 1 sued by Lieutenant-Colonel Harcourt r Tumor.
