ZOOLOGICAL SOCIETY.

"•' y ; —4 —' ANNUAL REPORT. / The third annual meeting of tho Wellington Zoological Society will bo held in the Town Hall Buildings on Wednesday next. The "annual report states that the society progresses. During tho year it offered several prizeß for competition by art students of several classes. The New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts cordially approved tho movement, and appointed some of its members to be tho judges of the pictures, which were all pictures of animals in (tho Zoo. Several good paintings were produced which attracted attention and admiration, gave an impetus to the- study of drawing and painting, especially as far as young people are concerned, and raised both itho society, and the Zoo to somo extent in popular, estimation. As to financial aid thero could be no valid argument against the proposal to ask tho Government for an educational grant towards the maintenance of the Zoo. Another important work which wau to somo extent educational was tho providing for the protection and perpetuation of important fauna that aro on tho verge of extinction. The' Government , must be approached to stop at once the destruction which thoughtless persons aro spreading among certain reptiles so interesting that at any reasonable cost, they should be protected. Animals presented to tho Zoo by the society were: One pair of flamingoes, one pair of plumed pisoons, three young golden pheasauts, one pair of European cranes, and contributions to the lioness fund. Also, one flamingo was presented to the museum.' Others (presented through tho t society) were: By a friend, olio pair Australian wood swallows; by Mr. W. W. Smith, one pair kiwis; by Mr. W. W. Smith, one Valuable'rail; by a friend,' one white duclc; by a friend, ono grey boll magpie. Mr. Stephen Cooley, Taiita, kindly donated a weekly supply of green feddor during tho year. A sum of money . was:in hand towards the purchase of a young tiger. The receipts were shown to total £95 155., and the cash in hand was spt down at 10s. »
