MASTERTON. The Mastcrton Homing Pigeon Club opened its season on Saturday, when a race was flown from Christchurch. Mr. J. B. Sutherland's Finisher was first home, doing the journey in 17 hours lmin. A heavy- thunder storm passed over this district on Saturday afternoon. A very fine line of fat bullocks are being dispatched to-day for the Hastings by Sir Walter Buchanan and Mr. H. K. M'Konzio. CARTERTON. The Acclimatisation Society has, during the last week or so, liberated some 30,000 trout in tho rivers near Cartertoil, the Waiohine and Maungatarere. Ta | uherenikau and Featherston streams have been attended to, 'and the society's officers are now engaged at Kaitoke. Tho quarterly meeting of tho .Wairarapa Past Grand's Lodge of Oddfellows was held at Martinborough on Thursday evening. Owing to a counter-at-traction in Martinborough, and the fact that the weather was very wet, the attendance was small. P.G. Brother J. F. Wallis presided. Prov. G.M. Brother J. A. Boake gave a short address on "Subvention," and received a vote of thanks. A vote of condolence was passed to P.G. Brother A. Bisli, in regard to a recent bereavement. The President (Brother J. F. Allen, of Clareville, has offered the Government (for workers' homes closer settlement) soma 80 acres of land adjoining .the Clareville railway station. FEATHERSTON. A sale of work in connection with' the Presbyterian Women's Missionary Union was held here on Thursday last. Tho financial result was. about £30. Hansard Brothers, of Dannovirke, secured the contract for tho new totalisator house for the Dannevirko Racing Club, tho prico being £499. There were several tenderers. At a special .meeting on Thursday of tho council of the Dannevirko Chamber of. Commerce it wa3 decided to inform the chief postmaster, Wellington, that ceirtain statements made to him at the meeting at Pongaroa concerning the mail service to Akitio were incorrect. Mr. S. Humphries was reported to have said that "by ;the service, which was connected with the Dannevirke-Herbert-villo service, mails for Aohanga stopped | overnight at Ti-tree Point and at Aki- : tio the following night, making threo days beforo reaching Aohanga from Dannevirke." This is wrong. The time taken in delivering tho mails from Dannevirko is only 1J day 3. t new Plymouth. "There aro few dirtier towns than New Plymouth," ejaculated Councillor A. H. Johnstone, at tho last meeting of the New Plymouth Borough Council. Ho added: "I say it deliberately." As an outcome of the discussion, it was 'decided to agreo to pay tho Taranaki Hospital Board £30 a year, terms upon which the body would allow its health inspector to make periodical inspections of, and reports on, the borough and its sanitation. An extraordinary general meeting of the shareholders of tho Inglewood Oilboring and Prospecting Company, Ltd., was held in the Town Hall on Thursday night, to consider tho offer of a syndicate for tho purchase of the rights and options of the company. A motion was carried' authorising the directors to grant an option for six months for the purchase of tho oil-boring rights and plant and machinery of tho company for the sum of £500, payablo as to £250 on signature of the option, and as to £250 on an allotment of shares being made by a company t« be formed to acquiro such assets, together with 5000 fullypaid £1 shares in the capital of such company; the nominal capital of such company not to cxcced £50,000, of which not less than £30,000 shall ho working capital, and .such compayy not to go to allotment until not less than £10,000"cotitriliiitiiiK shares havo been subscribed for."
