PLUMBERS' REGISTRATION.
2 THE FIRST EXAMINATION. 3 ■- ■ The Plumbers' Board of New Zealand t held its third meeting at Wellington 3 ' last week. The board decided t-o hold f its first examination on December 12 s and 13, the written. exitmination be- . ing taken on. tho first day and the i practical on tho next. The centres at t which the examination will bo held will 3 bo decided later on, when the number . of applicants for examination is known, j Tho first examiners will be selected from . master and journeymen plumbers in Wellington, and subsequently from the following centres in rotation: Dunedin, Auckland, and Christchurch, the idea ) being to widen the interest to bo taken i by master and journeymen plumbers in . tho education of the future followers of , this important trade. There will be ; three local supervisors at each exam- - ination centre, one of whom will be a [ master plumber and tho other a jour- ; neyman.. Up to the. date of the board's meetL ' ing 1255 applications for registration I had been received, and 315 of theso were , finally dealt with by the board ; tho ap- . plieants in each case having satisfied tho board they were entitled to. regisi tration certificates. A greater number i could have been finally dealt with, but for the fact that many applicants omitted to supply more or less' important information required by tho board. It is hoped that the board, at its next meet- | ing, will be able to finally deal with all . applications so far - received under j Clauses (a), (i.e., admission by exam- ( ination), or (b), (i.e., admission by the : possession of a municipal or drainage | board.license) of Section 7 of tho Act; , and the board will then immediately J proceed to deal with those applications which require careful consideration un- | der Clause (c). i.e., those not admissiblo ■ under (a) or (b), but who can give proof . of their competency to perform sanitary ' plumbing. i A rumour appears to have got abroad , that the board intended to dojiart from \ the provisions of tho Act requiring regis- | tration to be made under these three ; separate classes.' As a matter of. fact, ! the board has not at any time contem- ' plated'any departure, from the strict interpretation of tho Act. . An amending schedule of tho regula- ! tions proposed to bo made -giving the names of every locality or district in which, six months hence, it will be necessary that all sanitary plumbing is to be performed by a registered plumber. . In addition to the publication of the names of registered plumbers annually, supplementary lists will be periodically 1 published from time to time in the same ' manner, so that local authorities and ' others concerned will be kept regularly ' in touch with the names of those admitted to registration. | It has been decided that extracts from the "New Zealand Gazette" affecting plumbers' registration will jbe sent to.all local authorities concerned. The next meeting of the board is sot down for November 11. '; ■ i
