BOWLS & BOWLERS.

WELLINGTON CLUB RINKS. The following will play for tho Wellington Bowling Club in a friendly match against LyalT Bay next Saturday:—L. Blundell, B. 13. Allen, W. Berry, '.L\ Ballingor (s.); J. W. Brown, ID. M. Blake, W. E.' Crano, It. liallantyne (s.). TE HIWI CLUB. "Uniquo in tho history of tlio club" was the remark of one speaker at tlio opening of tlio To lliwi Club, at Island Bay, on Saturday afternoon, and tlio words woro apt. Tbo rain coming down in torrents, the green almost n lake, and tlio group of ovorcoated figures oil the bank, with umbrellas flying aloft, presented a startling contrast to tlio usual opening day scene of bright sunshine, gay bunting, and brilliantly-col-oured blazers. Tlio president, Mr. C. Hill, in a brief speech, thanked those presont for their enthusiasm and fortitude in braving the inclemency of tlio weathor, ■ and expressed tlio hopo that members would not look upon the day as an augury of the club's fortunes during the coming season. The green was in woll-night perfect condition, and none regrotted more than lie that the pleasure of a game was denied them. Nevertheless, the presence of_ so many on such a day annulled any disappointment, and ho looked forward with pleasure to the day when the weather would permit thorn to meet on the green in the old friendly rivalry. file president then cnlled upon Miss Hill to throw tlio jack, and much laughter ensued as the small whito liall ploughed bravely through the "lake" liko a boat taking tho water, and came to rest in a pool that all but liid it from view. The green was then declared open, and tho party returned to tho pavilion, where afternoon tea was served. A convivial aftcrnooti followed, enlivened with speeches, singing, and anecdotes, and, , as ono speaker put it, "What was lost in bowl practice was made up in joviality." Tho speakers during the afternoon wero: Messrs. E. G. Hill (vice-presi-dent), E. Moult (Wellington Club), V. Dimock (Thorndon Club), and.J. Gallio (Newtown Club). Tho representatives of tho various clubs wore welcomed by , Mr. E. G. Hill, and Mr. Gallio responded on their behalf.
