Colonel Stewart Nowall, C.8., wh« has been on an extended tour ol America and Europe, returned to New Zealand by the Rimutaka yesterday. Colonel Newall came to New Zealand 50 years ago, and is one of tho very few holders of both tho New Zealand and South African medals. Ho retired in 1902. becoming manager and secretary of :ho Wellington; Commercial Travellers' Club. . A passongor by the Rimutaka, which arrived at Wellington yesterday, waß tile Rev. W. Wallace, a Presbyterian minister, who lias como from Bristol to take up a'rfiarge in tho Thames district, Auckland. Wallace was accompanied by his wife and four children. Colonel Heard, Acting-Commandant of tho Defence Forces, lias sufficiently recovered from recent indisposition to resume duty. Captain Schilling, chief pilot at Wei. lingtoiiy returned from a visit to Eng. land by the Rimutaka yesterday, Mr. H. W. Slater has been seleoted by the Otago Professorial Board as the Otago candidate for tho Rhodes Scholarship.—Press Association. . Miss Mary Procter, the astronomer, who has been visiting the South Island, returned by tho Wahino yesterday morning. Miss Proctor is prolonging her visit to tho Dominion as she is preparing a book on her impressions cf New Zealand, and another on the Maori legends of tho stars. She will probably leave for England in December. Advice has been received that Mr. C. M. Holdsworth, general manager of the Union Steam Ship Company, loft London on October 8 for New Zealand. Ho joins til 3 Makura at Vancouver oil October 29, and is duo in Dunedin about tho third week of November. On Saturday morning a good number of Messrs. Whitcombo and Tombs' employees mot to make a presentation and bid farewell to Mr. Edmond Jones, who is leaving after four and a halfyears' service.. Mr. Hickson made the presentation. Mr. Jones responded. The presentation, oonsisted of a travelling bag and toilet-set; . The death occurred at the Grevniouth Hospital last week of- an old identity of tho West Coast, in tho per6on of Mr. John Livingstone, who resided' at No Town for over forty years. Tlie deceased was one of the best-known residents of the valley. Mr. John G'. Fullarton, assistant master at tho Otago Boys' High School, is resigning to take up fruit farming at Havelock. Mr. Fullarton wa3 in charge of the contingent of New Zealand Cadets who visited. Canada last year. Mr. and Mrs. P. M'Lean, of Taranaki, returned to the Dominion by the Rimutaka yesterday, after a visit to- tho Old Country. Tho Rev. E. C. Budd, chaplain to the Mount Eden Gaol, will leave Auckland for England in January next. While ho is away from New Zealand he wilj spend at least six months in visiting various public institutions in Great Britain. ' Mr. H. Williams, stationmaster in charge of. the Gishorne railway section, has received instructions to transfer to Napier as stationmaster. Ho will bo succeeded at Gishorne by Mr. L. P. Popproll, chief goods clerk at Christchurch. Mr. T.! Harle'Giles, Conciliation Com- • missioner, leaves Auckland for Hamilton to-day to hear tho Hamilton drivers' disputo. Afterwards he will Drcceed to New Plymouth, where ho will preside at the hearing of the Ta-ranaki bakers'- 1 dispute. Mr. Joseph Hore, who for many years ran the coach between Ranfurly and Naseby, died at tho latter place last week. The deceased was for some years a prominent footballer, andhad a widespread reputation in sporting circles. Arrivals at the Empire Hotel during the week-end included: Mr. W. J.
