The trade returns for the September quarter were published in this week's Gazette, from' which we gather that the exports totalled £3,669,242, against £3,068,170 for the corresponding quarter of last year, 'showing en increase of £601,072. A typographical error appears to have crept into the figures for tho past. quarter, as the flgiiTeß on page 3131, for the several ports, do not yield the total shown in the Gazette. The excess of exports over imports during the past year was £769,281, while in tho previous year the excess was £<70,800.

Customs duty collected at the port of Wellington yesterday amounted, to £2980 19s. Bd.

There appears to be no demand for wheat beyond tho usual hand-to-mouth business with smaller millers. There Is no moro in oats, and only a limited demand for oateheaf chaff. The potato market has again become weaker, and 325. 6d. to 3bs. are tho outside prices, though some merchants say that JOs. to 325. 6d. at country stations is all that they can give. The Bank of England rate was. on February 8, 1912, reduced from 4 to 34 ner cent., and on May 9 it was further reduced to 3 per cent. On August 29 it was raised to 4 per cent., and on October 17 to 6 per bent. It was reduced to .44 per cent, on April 17, 1913. On October 2 it was raised to 5 per cent. The Bank of Franco rate was reduced from 34 to 3 per.cent, on January 23, 1908, and continued at the latter figure until September 12, 1911, when it was raided to 34. per cent. On May 17, 1912, it was reduced to S per cent., on October 17 it was raised to 34 per cent., and on October 30 to '4 per cent. MARKET RATES OF DISCOUNT.
