A feeling of profound satisfaction," says the Melbourne "Argus," "must be evoked by tho knowledge that one of our great financial institutions, tho Colonial Mutual Life Assurance Society, is not financially unsound and has not been fraudulently conducted, a.9 was alleged in the petition presented to Parliament last year. As tho result of that petition a spsoial investigation was ordered, and tho sensational charges made have, in respect to every branch of them, been triumphantly rebutted. Tho Government inspectors aro able to state: "Tho directors wero charged in the petition presented to Parliament with fraud, dishonesty, incapacity, and mismanagement. Wo liavo no hesitation in saying that in our opinion tho charges of fraud and dishonesty aro wholly unjustified, whilst tho facts do not support tho charges of incapacity and mismanagement." -No acquittal could be moro oomprehensivo nnd complete, whilst the great outstanding result of tho investigation, which has occupied many months, is that tho society has emerged unscathed from the charges that its management was fraudulent and its financial position insecuro if not insolvent."
