WOOD DEFEATS A. DUNCAN. , 3y Telegraph.—Frass Association.! Dunedin, October 17. The Golf Championship meeting was Continued to-day. Tho indications were not good, but till about ten o'clock i tho Bky was clouded and conditions were perfect: then light rain began to fall, getting heavier ao mid-day approached, and eventuully settling down in a heavy downpour with a pretty strong and cold wind,from the southward. Tho matches ia tho morning wero all carried out under favourable circumstances. Tho semi-finals of tlio amateur ohampionship in the aftornoon, howevor, wero fought out und«r wretched conditions. - I'layers' hands wero numb with ■cold and tho men wero thoroughly soaked. Good golf was witnessed in the morning, even in cases where the competition'was not serious, Forbes (Timaru) easily disposed of Sargood (Dunedin), and Dr.'Ross' had no trouble with B. J. Smith, who was off his drive.- Ross was driving to perfection, A.,D. S. Duncan disposed of K. D. Duncan at the fifteenth green. He was. not play ing. tho sterling game shown on previous occasions. The professional matches in tho morn, ing both provided keen oontests, one being carried to tho eighteenth hole and ,tho other to the nineteenth. Clements 'was playing a sound game and on the iorrn showm'waa really more than a hole better than his opponent. lies was dormy 4 and only got clear of D. Hood at tho nineteenth grene. Dri Ross met Forbes and B. B. Wood net A. D. S. Duncan, in the afternoon, in the semi-iinals of tho amateur championship. Both were fino games, the latter especially, when the weather is considered. The first and second .holes wero ialved ill four. Duncan got the third in 8 and tho fourth was halved in 4, the fifth in 3, and the sixth Duncan won in 4, making him i up. The seventh was halved in 4 and tho eighth Duncan" lost, Wood placing a fine second a few feet from the holo. Duncan was out to right on the hillside. Rain, falling heavily, -had made all the greon very heavy, but this ono lies in a hollow gully, and a small stream of water was trickling slowly Tight across the hole. Duncan pitched right on to the green and stopped in the wuter very handy. Wood's putt failed. Duncan also failed to got his ball through the water and the hole went to Wood, 4—5. The ninth went to Wood also, 4—5Duncan lifted on. the green to avoid tho water, but failed to hole for 4., Tho tenth wlas halved in a good 3 under the circumstances. Wood was short with the tii'st, but played a lino approach up a heavy grean. Duncan was on the green in the first, and again lifted to avoid tho water, doing to the eleventh both players wero beginning to feel the effects of the exposure to, the storm, and Duncan made a poor second. Wood poor third, and,-tho. hole .was squared in li. Duncan sliced the next drive and. rebounded from- a post and laid the next into the bush near the side of tho green and gavo up the holo. Wood had got a fino straight drive, and his second was bandy. Going to the thirteenth Duncan got over the fence with. has drive. .Wood had a good position; but the second was shot: Duncan played' short over tho fenco to just across tho eleventh green. Both • thirds found ' tho green, and the hole was squared in 5.. Wood almost came to grief in the next tco. Clubs wero hard to hold, and both players were continually wiping tho grips with handkerchiefs. Wood got under his drive, and lifted it up to the Tight, lying on the hillside in a bad position with' a rush swamp to clear. Both drives wero too much to-the right. At the fifteenth' Wood stopped short in n good .position, hilt Duncan found a bn"l spot in tho rushes, and took two to .dear. Wood got tho holo in 3. Two up 8. to play. Wood got under, tho next drive, again lifting it np the gully a little, where it fdl in a ditch and was lost. Duncan got a fino drive, but remained in tho. track on the. hillside close to the green." Wood's third was low, and remained short. 110 Tan up with a good approach putt, but Duncan got ,a 3. Wood, 1 lip, 2to go. Thd match nbw seemed to; promise n fine finish. Duncan topped Has drive. Wood got a fine straight ball. Duncan sliced his brassey shot right into the liedgp, but it dropped back and lay an inch outside a wire fenco. Wood placed ■a short mashie half-way np tho green. Duncan chopped out, and pitched on the green,' and ran tc the far side of tho green. Wood laid tho third dead, almost laying Duncan a stymie. Duncan had to putt to make right across the green for a half. He got a fine line, and ran past Wood's ball, and then over the hole, lying' within a foot of the other side. Wood thus won, 2up and 1. Forbes and Ross was also a goodi match,. but was spoilt by the weather. Ross won the first in 5, the second in i. Tho third was halved in 4, and the fourth and fifth went to Ross in four; The sixth went to Forbes in 5, the seventh was halved in 4, and the eighth Ross won in 4. Forbes got tho ninth in 4, leaving Ross 3up at the turn. The tenth was halved in 4, and tho eleventh in 0. Tho twelfth wias halved in 4, and' the thirteenth Ros9 got in 5. Tho fourteenth was halved in 5, and Ross took the fifteenth with a 4, wining 3 up and 3. The Medal Handicap, played dn the afternoon, resulted:—-Dr. Hales, gross 82, handicap 6, net 76, being first, whilst J. Goss was second, C. A. Seymour third, C. Gardner fourth, and H. do C. M'Ar•thur fifth. Tho play-off In the tie for tho hogy match of Wednesday resulted:—J. Goss, 3 down, B. L. Taylor, 2 down. B. 8.. Wood and Dr. Ross play off in the final (36 holes) for' tho Amateur Championship to-morrow. 1 Tho Professional Match final (18 holes) Trill be played to-inorrow morning. AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP.
