BY REV. J. J. NORTH. (By Telegraph.—Prcas Association.) Wanganul, Octobor 17. At tho Baptist Oonforonce this ovening the Rev. J. J. North moved: "That the Baptist Union of Now Zealand enters an urgent protest against the proposal now bofore Parliament to increaso the number of totalisator permits allowed by law in this land. This union regards tho totalisator investments of £3,6oo,ooo—which represents an increase of 86 per cent, in two years—and the convictions for- gambling offencos which havo increased from 143 to 318 in one year, as evil -omens." Mr. North promised, within ono month, to 6ting tho cars of this country with revelations on tho gambling ovil. Tho audienco carried tho resolution without a dissentient.
