November I.—Australian Championship, J. Paddon v. R. Arnßt, Sydney. Petono's Opening. Formal opening of the Petone rowing season happens this afternoon. Ab usual, a programme of short races will be disposed of, and tho club members will be "at homo" to friends at the boat house. With pleasant memories of previous ploasant afternoon's at this function, a large contingent of crews from both town clubs aro making the trip to tho northerly foreshore, so tho racing is bound to bo keen and exciting. "Mercury" wishes the Petone oarsmen a merry and bright opening, as augury of a successful run throughout tho season. Tho Big Race at Hand. Next Saturday woek, on that soene of many a great aquatio conflict—the Parramatta River, in Sydney—will bo held tho long-awaited race for the Australian championship, and a stake of £200 asido, botweon Jim Paddon, tho holdor, and Dick Arnst, tho challengcr. Judging by press reports, both men aro lit and well, and both seem confident of victory. Tho affair is, as is only natural, exciting great interest throughout Australia, for it is gelierally under, stood that in tho winner will bo found Australia's next representative in i raco with Ernost Barry for the world'schampionship. In fact, if Arnst is tho man, his trip to England is assured, as his backors havo stated their intention of seeing him through with another raco on tho Thames, if ho "makes good" next Saturday.
