• There was a crowded liouso at the ffown Hall tb-night to .witness the professional contest for a purse of £50 and ■the welter-weight-championship of New (Zealand, " between "Denny',' Mnrphy ; (10st. 61b.) and "Pitto" Chapman i'( America), lOst. 51b. The opening round /was all in favour of Murphy, although there was not a great deal of work. V Murphy used his right with good effect, /but did not appear to put much energy .behind his blows. In the second round 'Chapman improved, but Murphy seeded 'to anticipate his hits. Murphy connected with , several straight lefts, but itho American went to his corner secm!dug none the worse. Both men mixed 'matters freely in tile third round. Oliap- [ man landed one good right, while I'Murphy used his left with good .effect. (The round was Murphy's. The fourth ■Sound was again Murphy's. He used fliis right, and a left uppercut with effect, and had Chapman on the ropes .when the gong went. In tho fifth jound Chapman took a lot of punish[ment, Murphy using both hands freely, [Jiis uppercuts boing well timed, while fn heavy Tight swing also got home. ! Chapman took his pu'nishriient ■ well. Murphy had now a good lead. Tho .seventh round proved tho undoing of (Chapman. He was tiring badly, and 'Murphy hit him when and where ho [wished. Ho went down for eight seconds early -in the round from a lieavy iright uppercut, and, later, went down 'tfor nino seconds, just as the gong vwent. The eighth round was not of long duration, Chapman failing to stop !a right cross, and going to the boards for eight seconds. On resuming, Chapman again went down' as tho Tesult of a straight left, followed by a right Swing. This timo. tho reforeo stopped the bout, and warded tho houours to Murphy, who was loudly applauded. Chapman put up a game battlo, but Lad no chance with Murphy, who showed greater cloverness, while hia condition was also superior.
