NOTES ON THE RACING.
(By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) Masterton, October 16. Showery weather prevailed all day,but a good crowd was present to see the racing. Everything passed off satis-' factorily, and only one inquiry was held. Tho result of this inquiry was that 11. Berry was adjudged blameable for crossing Leonta before having made the recognised distance in front. He was fined £10.
■ Guiding Way, a very handsome-look-ing colt, and a half-brother, to Helen Portland, scored decisively in tho Trial Stakes, after being in ITIO van the whole way. He was lucky at tho start, which was a rather mixed one, several of tho runners getting to cross purposes. Rosalys finished second, two lengths clear of Sunrose, who was at the head of a bunched field.
Tho Great Mogul won the Telephone ■Handicap from an indifferent lot. Zeus, the favourtie, was tho last to leave "the barrier. He made up a lot of leeway, but had r.o chanco with the winner, who won very easily. Lady Louisa was a good second, and Cadonia third. . As was anticipated, Immer scored decisively in the Flying Handicap. Secret Link find Mount Victoria were first off, but Immer was never further back than third, and, in the straight, he came through on the fence, and won very comfortably from Secret Link. Black Lupin came fast at the finish, and got third place, just ahead of Lady Laddo, who also finished well. Mount Victoria tired at tho finish, and Suratura was left at tho post. Leonta closed up at a very short price in tho Spring Handicap, but the fast pace in the first part disposed of his chances, and ho finished out of a place. Lady Moutoa made the running to the straight entrance, where Expcct and Sinapis closed up, and, in a good finish, the Feilding horse won by half a length. Matlow was a fair third, and then-came Leonta and Otaliu, with Byron and Bonny Boy in the rear. 'Master Lupin and Lubriline were backed in that order for the Bracelet, and. they finished in that order. Remissness made play for five furlongs, and then Corinthian took charge, but in the end Master Lupin beat him nicely, though Lubriline, who was slow to find his feet, appeared.to be going better at tho finish. Tho winner is trained at Opaki by R. Hatch, and tho race marks his .first win since commencing training operations. Merry Land waß sold after tho race for §12 10s. to Mr. C. O'Brien.
Tlio fifteen acceptors all started in the seven furlongs Hack Handicap, and the investment 011 several of the runners was solid. 'Record closed up favourite, but 110 looked hardly ready to see out seven furlongs, and finished well back, after nover being dangerous. Lord Palmer made the pace for five furlongs, when Lady Louisa took charge and was not again headed, though Overrate mado great efforts in the straight. Borsil was third iust ahead of Bunkum, and Piermont. Paramarama ran a fair race, but could not see the finish out. "Awahou paid a better price than was expected in the Stewards' Handicap, owing to strong support coming for Imagination. Tho black gelding was never out of a canter, and won vorv easily. Lady Laddo, who had finished fast in tho Flying Handicap, repeated her performance, and cut Imagination out of second money. Turna was fourth. Montreal made play for half a mile, when Imagination took charge, but in the straight .the favourite came along aiid won very easilv. It was reported that Antral had agpounM-for. ft.
mile on the Hastings tracks, and this sent the bay maro out a short-priced favourite in tho concluding event. She was in front practically throughout, and won nicely. With the winner out it would have been a good race, for tho rest of tho field finished in a bunch.
