Their Excellencies were subsequently welcomed by a large assemblage on the racecourse, and speeches were made by tho Mayor and Mr. Veitch, member for tlio district. In reply His Excellency stated that ho was greatly impressed by t'he loyalty shown in all parts ol' tho Dominion. His Excellency. was afterwards entertained at lunchcon, and later opened tho St. Laurence Ohurch bazaar, and visited tho colleges, lonving for Wellington yesterday afternoon.
Mr. Guy Johnston, of tlio firm of Johnston and Co., merchants, returned here yesterday after a trip to tho Old Country.
Mr. Edgar Waito, director of the Canterbury Museum, who has been on. a trip to Australia, returned hero by the Moeraki yesterday. He brought with him a number of ethnological specimens. Mr. Waite was shocked to learn of Mr. Augustus Hamilton's death, which had occurred since ho left Sydney. When word reached Mr. Waito yesterday lie was about to leave tho steamer to visit his old friend at tho Dominion Museum, and naturally tho news of his death was a very sad surprise.
Mr. David Jones, organiser for tho Reform Party in the South Island, is making a visit to Southland and Otogo, in connection with organisation work. Mr. Jones will be absent from Ohrißtohurcih for threo weeks or a month.
Captain Taylor, Australasian representative for Lloyd's, leaves Wellington for Sydney by the Ulimaroa to-morrow.
Mr. J. L. M'Clintock, local manager for tho Vacuum Oil Company, who has recovered from a recent illness; will bo a passenger for Sydney by tho Ulimaroa to-morrow.
Mr. Charles M'Malion, tho well-known theatrical' manager, returned to Wellington yesterday after a trip to the Old Country and Australia.
Mr. H. M. Skeet, Commissioner of Crown Lands, Auckland, is at present in Wellington on business. Ho will return this week.
News has been rccoived in Auckland of tho death of Mr. J. C. Smith, for many years a well-known Auckland business man. Mr. Smith, who hud not. been in the best of health, took a trip to Sydney bv the Niagara recently, and died in Australia on Saturday last.
Mr. R. L. Somers, Mayor of To Aroha, is at present visiting Wellington on municipal and other business.
Mr. Toogood, of the Wairarapa, who has been on a visit to Sydney and Melbourne, was among the passengers who arrived from Sydney by tho Moeraki yesterday.
Mr. George Stephenson, formerly of Dunedin, Invercargill, and: Gore, and a one-time representative footballer, arrived hero from' Sydney yesterday by tho Moeraki as manager for tho Royal Pantomime Company.
Mr. Oliver Nicholson, Mayor of Mount Eden, arrived from 'Auckland by tho Main Trunk express yesterday.
Mr. John Bevcridge, lessee of ths Grand Hotel, Wellington, since its erection, is resigning his cliargo on tho termination of his lease at tho end of the present month. Mr. Beveridge has acquired au interest in the leaso of tho Clarendon Hotel, in Cliristcliurch.
Mr. T. Mills, of'Feilding, representing the Country Newspapers Association, wall leave Wellington for Sydney by tho Ulimaroa to-morrow to attend a conference connected with that interest.
Sir. George Vosey Stewart, of Katikati, near Tauranga., Bay of Plenty ( and founder of To Puke and Katikati settlements, completed his eighty-first year u few days ago. Mr. Stewart, who is still hale and hearty, iB a native of County Tyrone, Ireland. He is a B.A. of Trinity College, Dublin,' and has taken a live interest in New Zealand politics and local affairs. About the year 1878 Mr; Stewart vsa very aotivo in promoting Irish emigration to New Zoaland, and tho Shaw-Savill ship Lady Jocelyn brought out largo numbers of North of Ireland farmers for tho Bay of Plenty, under his direction.
It is reported that . word has been roccivod that Dr. Ramage, late of Waitara, 'has received a public appointment in Warwick, Queensland, at a salary or £1000 per year and a free house.
Mr. H. W. Moss, manager of Messrs. Johnston and Co., Ltd., who has been under. treatment at a private hospital for injuries received in a trap accident on Wellington Terrace somo weeks ago, had sufficiently recovered yesterday to return to his residence.
Mr. Max Schnoideman, who is leaving for Sydney on Friday, was given a hearty send-off by the members of tho Jewish Club on Tuesday evening. Tho chairman (Mr. J; Zacliariali) voiced the general regret of the members at Mr. Schncideman's departure from Wellington, and wished him all success and h'appinness in tho future.
Tho death is announced "of another of Nelson's early settlers, Mrs. Harriet Palmer, of Hope, relict of thelate Mi'. Job Palmer. Arriving with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Tlios. Harman, in the Indus about tho last week in 1842, she resided in Brook Street till her marriage, when she removed to Hope, where she has resided ever since, viz., 58 years. Her ago at the time of her arrival was- seven years and her ago at her death 77. Sho leaves a , large family to mourn her joes', viz., six sons and six daughters. Messrs. H. T. Palmer, Brightwater; J. W. Palmer, Spring Grove; R. Palmer, Hope; E. Palmer,' Otaloi; C. Palmer, Eighty Eight Valley; and A. J. Palmer, Groymouth, aro tho sons. The daughters aro: Mrs. C. G. Havcock, of Feilding; Mrs. Jas. Bell (deceased), of Rcefton; Mrs. W. Still, of Brightwater; Mrs. B. C. Eglinton, of Palmerston North; Mrs: H. Tolley, of Feilding; and Miss Evclino Palmer, of Hope.
Mr. A. G. Knapp, for many years Nelson County Overseer, died at his residcnco, Spring Grovo, on Sunday, at tlio ago of 54 years. For about five years tlio late Mr. ICnapp was in bad health, which necessitated his retirement 601110 months ago from activo work. Ho leaves a widow, tlirce daughters, two of whom aro married, and three sons.

Loyell (Dannevirke), Mr. and Mrs. Charlton (Hastings). Mr. F. C. Bunny (Masterton),'Mr. John S. Eivart (Ottawa), Mr.. W. R, Kemball (Mastorton), Mr. J. Power (Feilding), and Mr. H. J. Cornfoot (Feilding). Among- those who booked at the Empire Hotel yesterday were> Mr A. J - Wood (Feathorston), Miss loogood (Foathcrston), Miss Dorothy Wayward (Svdnev), Mr. P. W. Kobinson (Reeftoil), Mr. Jr. Frecdmau (Belgium), Mr. G D Hansford (Christclmrch), and Mr \ M. Parker (Carterton).
