Several presentations were made hero on Tuesday evening, when tho Ladies' Committee of tho recent, military ball \yere each 1 presented with a gold brooch. Tho recipients were: Mosdames A. Cook, J. Sir Walter Buchanan mid Mr. M. Carkeek, of this town, have waited 011 the Minister in charge of the Tourist Department (Hon. R. H. Rhodes), and asked help in regard to forming a tourist track over the Tararuas, to connect Otaki and Greytown. Tho Minister promised careful consideration. Tho first competition for tho Ilautero Defenco Eilie Club's championship took place on Saturday, when Rifleman P. Cathy headed the list with 61, W. Thomas and Jus. Taylor being next with A recent, concert at Paraparaumu, organised by members of tho Roman Catholic community, proved a financial success. CARTERTON. Bro. J. H. Barlow, A.D., presided at the fortnightly meeting of the Totara Lodge, U.A.0.D., 011 Monday night. Advice was received from Rotorua stating that the Friendly Society's bed in the sanatorium {applied for) was now vacant. Bros. W. H. Baillie and J. H. Barlow were elected to represent the Lodge 011 the Friendly Societies' Council. Bro. A. M'Konzio was installed as V.A.13.,P.D.P., Bro. J. Johnston performing the ceremony. Two friends were proposed for membership. It was reported that the Lodge's A and li teams had finished first and second in the Masterton Friendly Societies'!' Council's football tournament, this being the sixth year in succession that the. Lodge liad'won. Final arrangements in connection with the Druids' cricket learn will be made 011 October '27.

Tho new children's ward at the Nelson Hospital was opened by His Worship tho Mayor (Mr. W. Lock) yesterday afternoon. A visitor to Nelson, had a rather exciting experience on Sunday afternoon. Accompanied by a companion he was driving in a gig, when, proceeding up Tasman Street, a motor bicvclo was seen approaching from tho direction of the Reservoir. The horse attached to the gig was not used to motor vehicles, and the. driver attempted to turn it round before coming up to tho motor. ]n doing this, howoverj the animal became restive, and backed over the bank of the 13rqolc Street stream. The occupants of tho trap escapcd injury, jumping out before it overturned, otherwise tho result might have been serious. The trap was slightly damaged. An eel weighing 141b. was cauglit in the Brook on Saturday 'afternoon. The eel, on being opened, contained seven trout, about six inches long. Messrs. 11. Newport and AY. Sowman, who captured the eel, saw another considerably larger. PAHIATUA. Mr. M'Kay, assistant stationmaster at Hukanui, leaves to-day to take up his new duties at Gisborne. Mr. V. Narby, of Hukanui, who has quite recovered from his recent illness, has left on an extended holiday trip to Christchurcli, accompanied by Mrs. Narby. . An interesting ceremony took place at the Fire Brigade Station on Monday evening, when recognition was mado of tho services of several of the members, as follows Captain S. Cx. AYallis received a two-vcars' bar. Tho secretary (Mr. D. W. AVilton) was presented with a handsomely designed certificate, for completing three years' service up to August 21 last, and long-service medals were also presented to Lieutenant A. AVhite and Foreman J. Slokcs, five years' servico cacli.
