KARORI BOROUGH COUNCIL

The fortnightly meeting of the Karori Borough Council was held last evening. Present: Tho Mayor (Mr. C. Cathie) and Councillors Burn, Bradnock, Davies, Hamilton, Henderson, Boyes, Skegg, and Cimino.

Councillor Hamilton brought up the matter of tho competition which would arise as the result of tho buses which were to bo run in the borough at about tho beginning of December. The competition, ho stated, would affect the city equally as it would affect Karori, and the city should co-operato with the council in tho matter. He considered that there should be a conference between tho representatives of tho Wellington and Karori Councils on the matter. On the motion of tho Mayor, it was dccided to hold a committee meeting of tho council as a whole to discuss this -question along with other tramway matters. This meeting is to bo held at tho close of next ordinary meeting of tho council. Councillor Skegg asked if the council were receiving any revenue form the advertisements placarded on cars going through the borough. Tho Mayor replied in the negative. Councillor Skegg then stated that the borough should bo getting some return from tlie advertisements. Councillor Hamilton was of tho same mind. Ho moved that a letter be sent to tho tramway superintendent asking for a portion of the revenue. Other councillors disagreed with tho motion as being one only wasting tho time of the council and the tramway authorities. Tho motion was eventually lost on the voices. _ A letter was received from' tho Thames Borough Council asking the cooperation of the council in urging upon the Government tho necessity of passing a brief amendment to tho Slaughtering and Inspection Act, 1908, .in regard to tho slaughtering of pigs. It was considered that swine should be slaughtered in a licensed abbatoir, and under inspectors versed in sanitary procedure and trained veterinary knowledge. Tlie reasons for tho request, in brief, were as follow: —Any farmer at present, however unskilful, could kill pigs for town supply. At present the animals could be suffering from'tuberculosis or other diseases, and with 110 inspection beforo killing could be treated in any unsanitary manner during transit. It was decidcd to support tho suggestion. The town clerk mentioned that he had noticed that the 3d. special tram tickets had not been issued by the conductor on a recent Wednesday -when. he had travelled by car. He had written to the tramway authorities, and had received a reply stating that the attention of those concerned had been drawn tj tho matter. The circular letter from the Foxton ■ Borough Council asking support in approaching Parliament in reference to obtaining power to run municipal picture shows came up for consideration. It was decided to support the proposal.
