Putikl came into port to-day after lutvinz received a decided "diutiug" during the gale at,the latter end of last wecK. Leaving Westport on Thursday afternoon, she ran into the storm in the Straits next morning, and by Friday evening was being severely butfoted by heavy seas. At 9 o'cldck on Friday Evening islio sighted Wauganui Heads, but the heavy seas running made it inadvisable to attempt an entrance. She, therefore, ran up the coast before the gale, till she roundeu Capo Egmont, but even there she could not, find sufficient lee to shelter under, bho therefore stood on till opposite Waitara, where she lay-to till the storm abated on Saturday night, when sho tailed back for Wanganui, which was reached four days after leaving Westport. Save for one or two broken hatches and splintered woodwork she was, however, endamaged. During the storm, which Captain Wahl6troin states waa ono of the worst he over experienced, the second officer had a narrow escape from being washed overboard, uy ib big sea., but just managed to catch hold of the rail and pull himself back to the fcafoty of tho deck. The steamer CairncToss, 4016 tons, Cap tain J. Hyslop', which has been, chartered by tho New Zealand Shipping Company to bring Montreal cargo to Now Zealand, is a new steamer, having been, built at thu latter end of last year by Messrs. W. Doxlord and Sons, Ltd., at Sunderland, for tho Caim Lino of Steamships, Ltd. She haiS a length of 370 ft., broadth 51ft., and depth 24ft. sin. Tho vessel is fitted with submarine signalling, apparatus, and is driven by two of Parsons' turbine engines. On completion of discharge in Now Zealand, the Cairnross will load for Londoni under tho auspices of tho New Zealand shipping Company. THE KIA ORA. 1 Tho Shaw-Savill steamer Kia Ora arrived at Dunedin from London direct at 7.30 a.m. yosterday. Subsequently sho visits Lyttelton to complete discharge. After loading wool on the coast, the Kia Ora will leave Wellington for London about tho end of November in time to catch tho January sales. ZEALANDIC LEAVES LIVERPOOL. Tho local agents for tho Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company have been advised that tho Zcalandic left Liverpool for Australian and New Zealand ports on October 4. It i» anticipated that she will reach Auckland about November 17 and Wellington about November 22. RARAWA'S RUNNING. Messrs. Levin and Co., local agents,for the Northern S.S. Co., have been advised that tho Rarawa will leave Onehunga for New Plymouth and Wellington on December 8. She is duo here on the evening of Tuesday, December. 9, and will be placed o"n tho slip for overhaul on the following day. She will Teturu to Now Plymouth on the evening of December 10, and will sail from the latter port for Onehunga on Dccomber 11.
