LIFE-SAVING SOCIETY.
« At the monthly meeting of thel executive of tho Wellington Branch of tho Royal Life Saving Society held last night, much discussion centred on the regulations governing the competition for the Schoolboys' Challenge Shield. . The rules re-quired that the nomination of every team must bo accompanied by a certificate from tho headmaster of the school nominated, stating that every ono of the team whom he nominates is a bona-fide pupil. Mr. V. H. Clifford moved that tho nomination of the team bo in tho hands of the secretary by the second week in December, accompanied by a certificate stating that each member nominated is a bona-fide pupil of tho school at tho time of nomination. In speaking -to the motion,' Mr. Clifford and other speakers pointed out that in many of the primary schools Christmas was the time when the boys in tho upper standards usually left, tho school either to enter business • or to continue their education at a secondary school. It thus happened that under the' present conditions of the competition, they were debarred from entering for tho shield if they intended entering business, not being considered schoolboys ; while if they - joined a higher school, that school received the benefit of tho training they had received at the. primary school, by scouring their nomination. A copy of the amended rules is to be sent to each of tho secondary "schools in Wellington and district, and the shield itself is to be exhibited to each in turn. It was also docided to liavo a dozen (or more if considered necessary) enlarged photographs of the. shield taken, these to be circulated among the schools in the country districts.
