PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Tho fortnightly meeting of the Petone Borough Council was heid last evening. There were present: Tho Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan), and Councillors Trueman, Townsend, Jones, Fiudlay, Anderson, Brockelbank, Cox, List, and Forsyth. In regard to the application of tlie Petono League Football Club for, tho use of a playing area on the Recreation Ground for next football season, it was . decided to refer tho matter to the Recreation Ground Committee, together with tho question of tho allocation of grounds for next season, to report on in a mouth's time. There was considerable discussion over an opinion received by tho solicitor to tho Municipal Association in reference to/the application for remission of rates on the St. David's Presbyterian Church Manse. Tho opinion stated that tho council had no power to grant tho remission. Tho Mayor moved that tho Board of Managers of the Church be informed accordingly, whilo an amendment was also moved that tho matter be referred to tho Valuer-General. The original motion was carried. i'iio Health Inspector wrote notifying one case of chickon-pox in tho borough. Complaint was made by Councillor List of tho frequentation of young boys at night in billiard saloons and tho town clerk was given instructions to draft a by-law to deal with tho matter. Application was made by Mrs. Udy for piping Mara's Creek, the writer agreeing to pay the cost of tho work provided that it did not exceed £35. Tho application was granted. The Commissioner of Crown Lands wrote in reference to the Wilford settlement, advising that an estimate of the cost of forming tho street had been submitted for aprpoval and that on receipt of a roply , thereto the council would bo further communicated with. Tho letter was received.

A lotter was received from tho Commercial Agency advising that the estate of Batteiisby and Brown had been assigned, and asking for a statement of amounts owing. Application was made by the Petone Technical School for tho council's usual donation of £30 to tho funds of the school. The application was granted. A communication was received from tho Public Trustee asking if tho council would be prepared to pay £25 compensation for tho land required on the Jackson Streot frontage. Should the council agree, tho writers w;ero prepared to recommend tho beneficiaries to accept that sum and further stating that as trustees they could not give the land without reasonable compensation. The letter was received. ■ It was decided to hold a mcotin;>: of tho committee set up in regard to the carting of coal on the wharf on Tuesday week. The Foxton Borough Council wrote asking tho suppor.t of tho council in tho direction of municipal authorities obtaining power to run picture shows. It was decided to support tho suggestion. The borough engineer (Mr. A. Cowie) stated in reference to Campbell Street extension, that the portion west of Richmond Street had been formed. .■Referring to the tide sea-wall ho reported that the plans submitted by tho Harbour Board engineer had shown a wall of tho same level on top as the existing wall, but considerably deeper. He (the engineer) had pointed out that there was no danger of scour but- the board's engineer however was afraid of an offshore wind scour and had insisted on his plan. Tho sewage engineer reported that tho outfall sower had been completeJ while tho sludge tanks wero in course of erection. Tho cost of the scheme to dato was £4132 17s. 9d. The sanitary inspector reported that ho had made 379 visits of inspection during tho month making a total of 1308 inspections for tho quarter. The roiiorts wore adopted.
