MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
THE PERIODIC POLICE EFFORT. ON THE CHINESE. Four Chinese appeared in tlio Magistrate's Court yesterday charged with having kept premises in Haining Street as common gaming-houses. Those were: Ah Yung (house No. 39), Ah Wong (No. 9), Kat Lee (No. 5), and Loe King (J\o. 21). On the application of Mr. R. M. Watson,, counsel for tho accused, the cases were adjourned till Monday next. Bail (£6O) was allowed. William Tonge, James Burdettc, James Donnelly, and Abraham Jones, who were charged witli haying been found in No. 5 Haining Street, also were remanded to appear again on Monday; and tlio same provision was made in tlio case of Arthur Leonard, wlio, it is alleged, was found in No. 39. OTHER COURT CASES. For insobriety, Mary M'llroy, John Phillips, William Brown, and Cornelius O'Sullivan' w«ro each find. 10s., John O'Neill was- fined £1, and Mary Wakeham was ordered to pay medical expenses amounting to £1 Is. The following were fined £3 eßch/for having broken prohibition orders: — John Buchanan, Edward Moham, Gustavo Petersen. John Scott was fined £1 for the theft of a pair of spectacles belonging to Michael Conway. Tho theft was committed in a boardinghotise. John Hugo Johansen was remanded to appear at Carterton on October 21 respecting a charge of his having broken and entered tho shop of Percy Hill. Au application by Phoobo Moses for separation, guardianship, and maintenance orders (on the ground of failure to maintain) against her husband, Jacob Norria Mosos, was dismissed.
