ACTIVITIES IN HAINING ST.

A POLICE HAUL.

Four Chinamen and five Europeans wero arrested as a result of a police raid on four Chinese dwellings in Haiuing Strcot at 7 o'clock last night.

At the time of the raid Haining Street was in darkness, and noiv and again ouo could faintly discern a form or two gliding in and out of the dim shadows. Precisely at 7 p.m. two closed-ill cabs drove into the struct, but this was not unusual, as cabs • often pass through the street empty, but those particular vehicles carried human freight. The cabs stopped, and out stepped a number of police officers. Tho police had laid their plans well, and before any suspicions were aroused ovcrything had happened. Simultaneously, Nos. 5, 9, 21, and 39 Haining Street were raided by the police, who were armed with warrants for the arrest of tho occupiers and those on tho promises. Before very many minutes had passed, a crowd numbering 200 had gathered. All those found on the premises were escorted to tho cabs, and wero driven off to the Mount Cook Police Station, together with a large quantity of material, in the shapo of pak-a-poo tickets. • At tho Mount Cook Polieo Court, before Mr. L. M'Kenzio, J.P., charges of being occupiers of common gaminghouses wero preferred against Loe King (No. 21), Kat Lee (No. 5), Ah Wong (No. 9), and Charley Yung (No.' 39), and charges of being found on common gaming-houses were preferred against "Win. Tonge, James Burdett, James Donnelly, Abraham Jones, and Arthur Loonard. All the accused wero remanded to appear at tho Magistrate's Court this morning, bail being fixed at £50 each for the Chinamen and £5 each for the Europeans. The polico officers responsible for the arrests wero: Senior-Sergeant Drew (in charge), Dctectivo-Sorgcant Cassells, Sergeant Trehoy, and Constables M'Kelvie, Wade, O'Connor, Bishop, and Dunn.
