Mt. Ernest Truman; who has returned hero (says tho Sydney "Herald" of Saturday last) to resume his duties as City Organist, must have enjoyed a rapturous time with tho Adelaide Philharmonic Society, for that musical body produced "Tho Pied Piper of Hamolin," his "Cantata Grotesque" (tho phrasois his own), for the first time in Australia, "and surely for tlio first occasion in tho history of the State was a composer stormily called for by tho audience, cheered to tlio echo, and commanded to speak." Tlio Adelaide critics unite in praising the new work in tho most glowing terms, and we read that it immediately impressed by its vivid colour, both in the orchestration and choral writing, by the appropriate humour of its motives, and by the • all-round mnsicianly talent which it revealed. All this makes glad reading, nor will Sydney music-lovers take greatly to heart the detection of a "blot on Sydney's musical history" because the work "was allowed to go to another State for its premiere." Mr. Truman has been frequently before the public hero as a composer, and his talents, and tho status he has attained, are thoroughly understood and appreciated.
