ECCENTRIC ACTS. PROTEST OF ELIJAH FRETTON. Oamaru, October 10. An eccentrio individual, Elijah Henry Frotton, a Londoner, visited Oamaru yestorday and indulged last night in an escapade in protest, as ho put it, of the high prices, had pay, and living in Now Zealand. Frotton, as an excuse for damaging property in and about the tort'n valued at £17, pleaded that ho was starving. Ho was sentenced to terms of imprisonment on sis charges, aggregating six months. The polico ovidence showed that Fretton had been convicted iof similar offences twelve months ago at Port Chalmers. The case is ono in which alcoholio drink did not enter. ■ INQUEST ON A YOUND WOMAN. Dimodin, October 10. Coroner Graham resumed the inquest this afternoon on the body of Margaret Mary Donnelly, a single young woman who died in iv house in Hope Street last Friday morning. The inquest was resumed for tho report from the Government Analyst. Mr. A. C. Hanion appeared for Miss Inglis, who lived in the house whore the death took place, and Mr. Callan for tho relatives of deceased. Miss Inglis declined to state from what place money had been; sent to her this month from Mrs. Ritchie, who was, she said, tho occupier of tlie houso. Tho coroner noted her refusal. Witness said sho was in charge of the boardinghouse, and they had never taken in families! or gentlomen as boarders. Tho inquest was further , adjourned till Friday next. PIONEER COLONISTS. Auckland, October 10. The annual reunion in commemoration of tho arrival of the pioneer colonists by tho ships Duchess of Argyle, Jano. Gifford, and other vessels, was held to-day. A cheque for being the oldest surviving descendant of the pioneers by tho Brilliant, which arrived in 1841, was presented to Mr. John Bain. Tho usual concert and thanksgiving service was held. STOCKTON POSITION. Westport, October 10. Tho position of the Stockton dispute is unchanged. Tho company again state 3 emphatically that it will only confer with the local mining executive. The men stand firm, and desire tho_ local mining department of the Federation of Labour to deal with the situation. A CHURCH EFFORT. Core, Octebor 10. At tho ten-day bazaar, recontly concluded, held to raise funds to assist in building tho new Catholio Church at Gore, the gross takings realised £960 Bs. 9d. The balanco, after paying expenses, amounts to £841 Bs. Bd. HAZEL STANLEY'S DEATH. Stratford, October 10. At tho Police Court this afternoon, Daniel Warren, charged with assaulting a young woman, Hazel Stanley, and causing bodily harm, whereby death was occasioned, was committed for trial in the .Supreme Court. Accused pleaded not guilty, and reserved his defence. ' BIGAMIST OWNS UP. Auckland, October 8. Thomas Ouslev was olmrgod at the Police Court to-day witJh- making a falso declaration for tho purpose of obtaining a certificate of marriage. It was stated that accused had a wife in England;, and went through a form of marriage'at the registry office, Auckland, in December, 1911/ Ousloy pleaded guilty and was committed to tho Supremo Court for sentence.
