ROYAL OOMIO OPERA COMPANY,
"Miss Hook of Holland," the best of Paul Reubens's majiy compositions, and tho solo ono that readies the coraio opera standard, attracted another very large audience to tho Opera House last evening. In its quaint Dutch setting, with its pretty colouring and charming numbers for both, chorus and principals, "Miss Hook" rallies high in tho scale of musical plays. Such numbers as the chorus, "Cheeses," and tho madrigal (unaccompanied), tlio solos "Work 1 and' "The Flying Dutchman" and "Fly Away Kite," would brighten any bill. An incidental danoo by _ Miss Vera l'carco and Mr. Holland displayed tho latter as a young dancer of very great promise. "THE BELLE OF NEW YORK." For tho two farewell performances of tho Royal Comio Opera Company a special revival of tho most of all comio operas, "Tho Hello of Now York," will bo prosentcd. This glorious work has ever proved ail immense attraction through New Zealand, and there is every roason to believo theso two performances will bo most welcome to all lovers of this bright class of musical play. -Miss Blancho Browne will appear as tho Salvation Army lass Violet Grey; Miss Josbio Lonnen will be seeu for the first time as Mamie Clancy; Miss Vera l'earco appears as Fifi Fricot; and Miss 01iv6 Godwin will appear as Cora Angeliquo, tho "Queen of Comic Opera." Mr. Leslio Holland is cast for Ichabod Bronsou; Mr. Edmund Shorras is the Harry Bronson (his son); Mr. C. It. Bantoek, "Doe" Sniffkins; Mr. Edward Nablo, Blinky Bill; Mr. Arthur Lissant, Kenneth Mugg; and Mr. Jack Cannot will bo seen for tho first tiino as tho "Polite Lunatic." THE BUTT-RUMFORD CONCERTS. Tho sccond of tho Clara Butt and Kennerlcy llumford concerts takes place this ovening at tho Town Hall, and another great audience is assured. Hiß Excellency tho Governor, tho Countess of Liverpool, and suite will again be present. Mmo. Clara Butt will sing "Rond'il Sereiio" (Handel), "The Erl King" (Schubert), "Fairy Pipers" and "Voices of Children" (Brewer), "Tho Voices of Home" (Lane Wilson), "Tho Proraiso of Life" (Cowen), with organ obbligato by Mr. Paj?;o, and Handel's celebrated "Largo" will be given as an extra number, with piano, violin, and organ accompaniment. Mr. Konnorley Rumford will sing: "0 Star of Eve" (Tannhauser) (with organ), "Tho Two Grenadiers" (Schumann), "Silent Noon" (Vaughan Williams), "Sho Moved Thro' tho Fair," and "A Ballynure Ballad," two old Irish airs, and "Tho Yeomen of England (German). Tho duet will bo "Au Claire do la luno." Mr. William Murdoch will play • several pianoforte solos, and Mr. Mowat Carter will be heard in somo selections for tho violin. The plan will bo at the Dresden until 12.30, and afterwards at Christeson's, where tho 55., Bs., and 2s. tickets can also bo obtained.
HIS MAJESTY'S THEATRE. A particularly bright and attractive programmo is being presented at present by tho Bronnan-Fuller Vaudovillo Company at Hia Majesty's Theatre. The artists includo: Marcell and. Bell, acrobats i Vardamann, feinalo . impersonator; Comvay and Syiuioot, coraody jugglers; Delavale and Gilbert, _ comedians: tno Brirfit Sisters, Jessie Wilton, Doris Tindall, Lily Vockler, and last, but by no means least, Esmeralda, the brilliant xylophonist, and Schepp's Circus. . There will bo a matinee performance for children and adults at 2.30 this afternoon. This will bB made especially attractive for children by an extended performance of Schepp's. Circus, which includes highly-trained dogs, monkeys, jxmies, and cats, whose antics aro particularly appealing to . the youngsters. KING'S THEATRE. • At the King's Theatre is being shown a fine pictorial representation of Dion Boucicault's drama, "The Octoroon," which, a generation ago, was a popular bill with touring dramatio companies. It is acted powerfully by the talented Vitagraph flayers, and photographically is one of the most striking photoplays presented for a long time in Wellington. There will bo a matinee performance this afternoon at 2.30, and complete chango of pictures will feature the latest Dines drama, "The Pretty Ward." SHORTTS' THEATRE. < The star picture at Shortts' Theatre, Willis Street, to-day, will bo the Gaumont masterpiece, "Tho Mcssago from the Sea," a thrilling sensational sea drama in picture form, which should attract large crowds. A complete change will, bo presented on Monday. THE EMPRESS THEATRE. Those who have not already witnessed the current programme of tho EmpreßS Theatre continuous pictures will have a last opportunity of doing so this afternoon and this evening. Tho principal item of an attractive series is tho Edison Company's socioty dotectivo drama, "Tho Diamond Crown." A prominent socioty woman reports to tho polico that thero havo beon a number of thefts of jewellery in hor house, where several wealthy guests aro staying. A young lady detective is instructed to investigate tho mattor. Sho is- introduced into tho house as the lady's secretary. Tho lady detective enters the society lady's bed-room at night and sees hor emerging from an adjoining bedroom through a sliding wall, carrying tho diamond crown belonging to ono of tho guests. The dotectivo gives a signal, and tho thief is immediately arrested with the stolen jewel still in her hands. Amongst the other films is a capital A.B. comedydrama, "The Work Habit." A new series will be shown on Monday. "80-PEEP" PANTOMIME, ff A pantomime to bo successful must bo made up of much that is novel, must havo bright and tuneful music, songs that will appeal and linger in tho memory, comedians who can amuso without being vulgar, must have its marches, ballot girls, gorgeous dances for tho ensembles, scenery that will please tlio oj'Cj and speciality artists who will amaze in wonderful and dexterous exhibitions. All this is promised in tho production of "80-Peep," by Stanley M'Kay's Royal Pantomime Company at tho Opera House on, Thursday. Tho music and book of "80-Peep havo been specially written by Mr. Harrv Taylor, and aro claimed to bo much above tho a vera go in pantomime production. The cast of characters mil bo found to be equal to any that has appeared in New Zealand in pantomimo. It is stated that Miss Kathleen Mack (principal boy), Miss Rita Webb (principal girl). Miss Cora Terry, and Miss Esmo M'Lellan all havo parts which suit them admirably. Mr. liruco Drysdalo plays the Damo "Widow Bumpkin," and is said to givo an immensely amusing study of tho character. "THE PRIVATE SECRETARY." In tho Town Hall Concert Chamber on Wednesday next, Charles Hawtrey's hilarious farce-comedy "The Private Secretary" will be revived. Tho cast, which includes Messrs. N. E. Aitken, C. Bentlov Russell. P. A. Devereux, F. Ellor, G. T. P. Williams, C. Pullyn, H. C. Grout, and Dr. N. llales, Misuses Ethel, Lissack, Iris Lennox, Mario Fix, and Ruby Scott appears to mako a Btvong amateur combination. Mr. Charles F. Blako is stage managing tho production. The Wellington Gas Company Orchestra is to supply tho incidental music and orchestral selections. The box plan is now open at tho Dresden.
"QUAKER GIRL" COUNTRY TOUR. At tho termination of tlio present Wellington season, J. 0. Williamson's Royal Comio Opera Company will Btage "Tho Quaker Girl" at Masterton, on Ootohor 14; "Tho Quaker Girl'' and "Tho Sunshine Girl" at Napior, on Octobor 16 i\nd 16; and those operas will bo presented at Palmorston North on October 17 and 18. "Tho Quaker Girl" will bo staged at Hawera on October 20; at Eltham on October 21; and at Now Plymouth on October 22. The North Island tour will terminate at Wangnnui on October 23 and 24, when "Tlio Quaker Girl" and "Tho Sunshine Girl" will be presonted. Tlio box plans will bo opened in each town throe days prior to tho opening nights. "THE COMEDY OF ERRORS." Tho Shakespeare Club announoes for its final publio reading of tho session that delightful farco "Tho Comedy of Errors." Tlio chief characters nro cast as follow: —The Duko, Mr. C. W. Tanner; Aegeon. Mr. W. E. Fuller; Antipliolus of Epnosus, Mr. W. D. Gotham; Antipholus of Syracuse. Mr W. Godfrey; Dromio of Ephesus, Mr. W. R : Bock; Dromio of Syracuse, Mr. H. E. Nichnlls; Aemilia, Mies C. Holmes; Adriana, Miss L. M'lntosh; Lueiana, Miss Reading. The reading will bo given in the Sydney Street Schoolroom on Thursday next.
