MAKARA MATTERS.

RETALIATION. ON CITY COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Makara County Council was held yesterday morning. There were present: Councillors IT. T. . Moore (chairman),. G. Mark, J. H. Haggerty, J. Taylor, H. Eastwood, and H. J. Monaglian. A letter was rocoived from tho Wellington City Council, in responso to the county- counoil's request that they should pay £42 10s. per annum towards the upkeep of Ngahauranga Gorge Road. The council stated that it ct/uld not see its way to accede to the request. The chairman stated that he was very glad that the City Council had refused, as ho had a proposal before him now to mako them pay. He moved to instruct their solioitor to draft a special order to create a separate rating area at Ngahauranga. _ Such area to comprise the following properties:—The Wellington Meat Export Co., the Bank's Meat Co., Messrs. Dimock and Co., the City Abattoirs, and Maco and Nicholson's quarry site (owned by Mr. E. Perrott). Ho also suggested/ that a j six farthings in the £ rate be imposed. This would produce £730 per annum. The council had power to impose even a nine-farthing rate, which would bring in £1000 annually. Tho money, of course, had all-to bo spoilt on the upkeep of tho rood. In refusing to pay £42 10s. voluntarily, stated the chairman, the City Council would now make itself liable to pay £80. The motion was carried unanimously.

A proposal made by the chairman in reference to the upkeep of the' Hutt Rond was that the road be vested in the council, so that it could erect a toll-eato, and collect sufficient money towards this end. He had mentioned this suggestion to the Mayor of Wellington, who disliked the'idea, becauso of the inconvenience to traffic occasioned by it. Councillor Moore had then proposed the "franking" of all vehicles. At any rate, ho proposed pushing' the mattor at the next conference of local bodies. It was decided, on the motion of Councillor Eastwood, to vote £100 towards the orection of the breakwindwall at the top of Makara Hill. The wall is to bo a solid one, and in conformity with the plan_ prepared by Mr. G. W. Brigham (engineer to the Karori Borough Council). Tho work of erection is to bo commenced immediately . The Johnsonvillo Brass Band wrote, asking for pecuniary assistance in support of their instrument fund. Councillor Eastwood proposed that the council contribute £10, provided the band played "all tho musie 111 Johnsonvillc." His motion lapsed for want of a seconder. Councillor Monk then sugcosted that tho amount bo reduced to £5, provided that tho band play once a month in tho Makara, Hull. This paction TTOf oarrio4) ,
