MOTORS AND ROAD UPKEEP.
— ' HEAVY WEAR.AND TEAR. Tho serious ■ damage caused to tho roads in tho Mount Eden district by rapid motor-car traffic was tho subjcct of somo observations by tlio engineer at this week's mooting of tho council (says tlio Auckland "Star"). Ho stated that ho had given tlio matter closc attention and was in, a position to say that tho traffic was most destructive, and somo steps would have to bo taken to minimiso tho damago. The suction action of tho car' wheels when the veliiclo was being driven at a from twenty to forty miles an hour disintegrated and loosened tho material on tho surfaco of tho roadway. In order to clieok the evil tho engineer suggested tlio desirability of coating tlio carriageway with tar, and indicated somei of the points for. immediate attention. Tho matter was referred to tho Streets Committeo. Tho council had alio beforo it n proposal to make a by-law limiting tho speed of cars and motor cycles to fifteen miles an hour oil the roads, and fivo miles an hour round corners and at intersections. It was pointed out that it would be absurd to require motor-cars to reduce speed to fivo milos at all intersections, and that to crawl round a corner at fivo miles was moro dangerous than a speed of eight or ten miles, for tho reason that with tlio low paco tho machine was not under control. Eventually it was agreed to mako a by-law, limiting tho spend at fifteen miles and fivo miles an hour respectively.
