BUTTER FOR AMERICA.
ENCOURAGED BY REVISED tariff; An instance of how the United States Tariff Revision liill will benefit New Zealand through its exporters of produce is supplied by a cablegram which has been received by the general manager of tho New Zealand Dairy Association (Mr. H. E. Pacey), in response to inquiries as" to how tho liill would affect dairy produce. The message, according to tho Auckland "Star," states that tho Bill has been signed by President Wilson, thatj tho whole of its provisions will be immediately enforced, and that butter will be subject to a duty of two cents. Formerly, tlio duty was six cents, so it will be seen that tho effect of tho Bill will bo to encourago. importation, of dairy produce from outside countries. The new rate of duty is even less than that of Canada 1 (three cents), and, in the. opinion of Mr. Pacoy, tho United States Pacific Coast trado promises to develop to an extent equal to that of Canada. It is interesting to note that for tho year 1912-13 tho butter exports from New Zealand to Canada amounted to 115,327 boxes—in 1911-12 the quantity was 51,512 boxes ,and in 1910-11, 9800 boxes. Mr. Pacey -informed .1 reporter that his association had already booked several valuable American orders on tlio strength of tho revised tarilf, and it only remained for tho shipping companies to provide better transit facilities when trado with America should flourish. Tho chairman of tho association (Mr. Wesley. Spragg) leaves Auckland by tho Niagara on October 24, for Vancouver, en routo to America, on business connected with butter shipments. Mr. Spragg will also visit England.
