TAEANAKI STREET CIRCUIT. Tho quarterly mooting of the Board of Management of the Taranaki Street Circuit was held this week, Hot. J. y • Chapman presiding. Tho financial statement gavo a credit bnlanco or tda odd 011 tho working of tlio quarter. Tho membership returns _ wero oeU adults, with a. largo junior list now wider revision. Tho Aro Street Mission Sunday Schools and Endeavour Societies all reported a satisfactory condition. By a unanimous vot-o the Kov. J. G. Chapman was invited to remain ill tho ciradit for a fourth year, and the invitation was accepted. Generous expressions of approval wero given of Mr. Chapman's services as preacher and pastor. Complimentary reforenco was made to the Kev. AV. S' Potters services, and also to tlio Rev. J. H. White, of Brooklyn, who was invited to remain a second year in tho circuit. In view of probable alterations 110 appointment could be mado for tho present to Webb Street portion of tho circuit. Messrs. W. E. Redstone, F. Chin'chcn, and G. Petlierick were appointed representatives to tho Synod, with Messrs. Helyer, Nowham, and
Rev. J. 11. Wliit-o as substitutes. Tlio following resolution was carried to bo sent to Synod:—"lt having been found 1 expedient in somo cases to appoint a minister to a circuit for a longer period than fivo years, and in order to facilitate such extended appointments conforcnco may deem expedient in tlie future, the conforenco be urged to obtain the necessary legislation to enablo it to appoint a minister to a circuit for an indefinite period, and thus bring it into lino with the usage of tlio ex-primitive and other Methodist churches, providing always tliat the present system of annual invitation to ministers bo retained." DEBATING SOCIETY FUNCTION. The Hon. 0. M. Luke, M.L.C., presided at tlio banquot which marked the closing of tlio South Wellington Methodist Literary and Debating Society. Several toas'tß were honoured, including " Tlio Parliament of Now Zealand," 'proposed by Mr. W. 11. Millier and responded to by Hon. C. M. Luke. M.L.C., who expressed the opinion that the time was not far distant when chances of an important character would be made in tho Upper Houso; "Tlio Ladies," proposed by Mr. W. B. P. Perrott and responded to-by Mrs. J. P. Luko; " Our Society," proposed by Miss M. Cozens, responded to by Mr. S. T. Martin; "Kindred Socie--1 ties." proposed by Rev. J. Ward; and 5 " Tho Secretary." Tho toasts were in- ■ terspersed witli items by the following: I —Pianoforto duet, Messrs. W. Jon- ! nings, and W.' 11. Millier; songs by • Misses 0. ChappelL and E. Boxall, and ' Messrs. K. E. Luko and D. A. Jones; - flute solo by Mr. A. M'Donald, a liu--1 morons quartet by Missos Ward and - Messrs. Dawson and Lunt, and a clever - and amusing entertainment by Mr. • Herbert Seaton.
