PAHIATUA NOTES
Tho committee appointed to purchase horses for tho Pahiatua County Council Tcpprtcd on Saturday that it had bought three horses at £40 each, and one at £30. Tho horses 'were- bought subject' to fourteen days' trial, and proved satisfactory. Tlio chairman stated that it cost £iOOO a year to keep the 21 horses used in tho county teams. For the moro economic working of the teams, he urged that the council should do away with all casual work as much as possible. Tho whole of the work should be done with the council's own teams. The question of effecting economies was referred to the engineer.
The Pahiatua County Council on Saturday appointed Mr. G. W. Field, surfaceman for the Maiiawatu'Gorge Road. There were eight applicants. It is conjectured that tho fire which destroyed the largo woolshed on Mr. ,T. Chilow's property at Pori early on Thursday morning was duo to the fusing of the wires of tho electric power and lighting plifnt. Mr. Clulow and a farm hand had beon working in tho shed up till dusk the previous day. The fire had a strong hold when discovered. Buckets of water saved tho adjoining.sheep yards from destruction. Tho Akitio County Council, at its meeting on Saturday, decided to erect wiro netting on the sides of tlio bridge over : tho river between tho Pongaroa township and tho school. It was considered that by this moans tho structure would bo rendered safer for tho school children who cross tho structure daily.
The revaluation of the rateable land In the Akitio County is now proceeding. According to a report submitted to tho Akitio County Council meeting on Saturday it was shown that the total expected to bo realised during the present year for rates in tho county amounted to £6-555 Os. 6d., the contributions being sot down as follow:— Akitio £1973 Os. 7d.; Pongaroa, £1930 18s. 5(1.; Wailii, £1204 7s. 6d.; Mataikona, £877 17s. 2d.; and Rakaunui, £568 16s. lOd. As a result of Crown land being opened up the general rate fiioivs an increaso this year of £81 7s.
3d. v Tho local postmaster (Mr. Steele) is advised that Mr. A. P. Dryden, Chief Postmaster, of Wellington, is paying an official visit to Pongaroa on Friday, October 10. A public meeting is being nailed to discuss the mail route. Mr. Dryden is anxious to ascertain tho views of tho settlers in tlie matter.
