Over the settling of wagers to-day there was a good deal of talk regarding tho difference between Soltano's form iit tho Derby and liis performance in the Clibborn Stakes. It was unreservedly recognised, however, that Soltano ran his best races when he was allotted to mako the running. In tho Derby he was kept behind while ho was pulling hard, and that was what boat him. FtEMINCTON CALLOPS. (Rec. October 7, 7.5 p.m.) Melbourne, October 6. Sea Prince boat Yenoda over a mile in lmin. 4Gsec.; Allansford beat Avonwort and Mountain Princess over ten furlongs in 2min. 16' sec.; Gladwyn did nine furlongs in 2min. IJsec.
Particulars to hand concerning Mr. Hugh Lattor, whoso appointment _ as headmaster of Wanganui Collegiate School was recently cabled from London, show that lie has beon a member of tho staff of Cheltenham College for twenty-two years. He is spoken of as being a good organiser and teacher, and his good influenco upon tho boys of tho college, especially tho older ones,, lias been very marked. He was educated at Marlborough College and Corpus Christi, Oxford, distinguishmg himself in classics and literature, and winning numerous scholarships. He is a member of the Teachers' Guild of Great Britain, and of the Assistant Masters' Association, and is 45 years of age.— Press Association.
Mr. James Stcvonson, science niastcr at the District Ilifill School at Wellington, Now South Wales, has been selected from nine applicants for tho position of assistant-instructor in agriculture under tho Wellington Board of Education. Mr. Stevenson was trained at tho Sydney Training College, and gained a scholarship which took him through tho Hawltesbury Agricultural College. He is to bo employed principally among the smaller schools in the Wellington district.
