DYNAMITARD IN BANK.
CLERK SPOILS THE OPERATION. (By Tolesraph—Press Association.) Auckland, October 7. An unsuccessful attempt was made to rob the safe of tho Newmarket branch of tho National Bank of Now Zealand to-night. Tho cashier and counter clerk left the building at 5 o'clock, everything being then secure. Tho countor clork returned shortly bofore 7 o'clock to do some work, and, while standing outside, heard a loud explosion. Accompaniod by a passerby, ho unlocked the door, finding the place full of smoke. An attempt lad been made upon tho safe. The lock was shattered, the brass fittings' being strewn round the room as well as some aoft substance, which had evidently been used to pack tho charge. A piece of fuse was found in front of tho safe. The police woro immediately summoned, but found nothing to indicate how the intruders gained entrance, tho doora nnd windows being intact. There is, a right-of-way at tho back of the building, from which, an entrance could be effected unobserved by anybody possessing a key. The safe contained £8.
