Vice-Regal, Hie following had the honour of receiving invitations to dinner at Government House on Monday evening:— The Hon. the Prime Minister, the Hon. Colonel J. Allen, Sir Walter Buohanan, the Hon. U. J. Jolmston, the Hon. J. E. Jenkinson, the Hon. G. Jones, Dr. M'Arthur, S.M., Mr. W. B. Montgomery, Mr. J. M. King, Mr. 0. Wilson, the Hon. 11. M'Kenzie, tho Hon. J. A. Millar, tho Hon. J. D. Ormond, Mr. J. Colvin, M.P., Mr. W. Nosworthy, M.P., Mir. L. M. Isitt, M.P., and Mr. A. Hamilton.

This afternoon the Countess of Liverpool will open a sale of work at tho Sydney Sti\?et Schoolroom. On Thursday evening the Countess of Livorpool will be present at Madame Clara Butt's concert, and on Friday ovening their Excellencies _ will attend tho performance of " Miss Hook of Holland." The second concert of Madame Clara Butt on Saturday night will also bo given in the presence, of the Countess of Liverpool. On Monday evening next the Vice-Regal party will leave for 'New Plymouth. On Tuesday they will officially visit that town, and will then go on to Hawera and Stratford, and will arrive in Wanganui oil Tuesday night. The party will spend Wednesday at Wanganui, and will arrive back in Wellington on Thursday morning.

Tho Auckland Suburban Local Bodies' Association, says our special correspondent, has passed a resolution, on the motion of Mr. W. R. Bloomfield, recognising the distinguished and honourable career of the late Sir Wm. Russell, and expressing its keen appreciation of his great services to tho Dominion, and extending its deep sympathy to Lady Russell and family. Mr. G. F. Johnston, managing director for Messrs. Johnston and Co., Wellington, who has been on a. visit to the Old Country, will return to Wellington by the Main Trunk express from Auckland on Monday afternoon next. Mr. Clement Wragge loft Duncdin for the north by tho Victoria last evening. Sir Clias. Bowen, Sneaker of the Legislative Council, left. Lyttelton for Wellington by tho Wahino last evening. ■ The Hon. G. J. Smith and the Hon. C. A. C. Hardy left Lyttclton for Wellington by the'Wahino yesterday. Mr. C. J. 'Parr, Mayor of-Auckland, Mr. R. Tudehope. chairman of tho Electric and Water Committee of tho Auckland City Council, are visiting Wellington in connection' with the proposed amendment to the Municipal Corporations Act, so as to protect tramway companies with vpstod interests against municipal competition. Mr. Parr will probablv return to Auckland to-day, while Jilr. Tudelione, who is accompanied by Mrs. Tudehope. expects to remain for about a week. Messrs. J. J, Walldato' (manager of tho Auckland Tramways Company) and P. M. Hansen (director of both tho Auckland and Takapuna Tramways Company) are in the city in connection with tho matter. Mr. J. R. Baxtor-Brnco, solicitor, of Sydney, anil formerly of Now Zealand, died last week. About a month ago Mr. Bruce was operated upon, and never rallied. Ho was highly esteemed in his profession. He leaves a widow, two daughters—Mrs. Tucker, now in England, and Miss Violet Baxter-Bmco —also two sons—Mr. R. E. BaxterBruce, of West Australia, a.nd Mr. A. C. Baxter-Bruce, barrister-at-law, in Svdnev.

Mr. "Dick" Stewart, who has boon associated in .New Zealand with tho firm of J. C. "Williamson, Ltd., for tho last 20 years, is shortly to leave for Melbourno, having been appointed manager of tho new playhouse in that city, which is to bo called tho Williamson Theatre. Ho will probably leave New Zealand shortly after next Easter. Mr. Stewart has mado many friends in all parts of New Zealand, who, while glad to hear of his promotion, will regret the departure of one who has won tho respect of all with whom ho has como in contact, both in business and social li'fb. l . All his acquaintances and theatre-goers generally will wish him every happiness and success in his now sphere ofactivity. Mr. Pollock, late secretary of tho New Zealand Club, was at yesterday's luncheon of tho chub elected as ono of its lifo members. Mr. and Mrs. P. S. Carroll arrived from Waipulcurau yesterday. They aro staying at tho Empire Hotel, where Miss Carroll (Wanganui) is also a guest. Dr. Maurico Earlc and Mr. Imlay Saunders motored from Wanganui yesterday, and are staying at the Grand; Hotel. Mr. G. J. Blaokie, of the Dlunedin Telegraph Office, has received notice of his transfer to Wellington, and is due from the south this morning. Mr. Blaokie was a winner at the Dimcdin Competitions. Mr. Robert Dowar, Town Clerk of Ravensbourno (Dunedin), died suddenly on Saturday morning. Mr. Dewar was formerly Town Clerk of Gore for a number of years, and was widely known and esteemed in Southland. Mr. F. Meadows, of Christehurch, who is to act as superintendent of tho Auckland Exhibition, is expected to arrive on October 20. Mr. Meadows was superintendent of the Auckland Exhibi' tion of, 1889s Mr. Tlios. 0. Price, of Dunedin, has resigned his position as managing director atid business manager in New Zealand for J. W. Swift) and Co. (tho Tyser Line), and is succeeded by Mr. ID. J. P. Denny. Mr. B. A. Woolfe, who has been in charge of tho locomotive branch of the Nelson railway for some yeaTS past, has been transferred to Newmarket (Auckland). Mr. J. F. Atkins, of Wellington, is at present on a business visit to the South Island. Mr. Munro, manager of the Chatham Islands Fishing Company's freezing works at Owenga, left for tho Chathams by tho Himitangi last" evening. ,

Mr. H. Atmore, M.P. for Nelson, arrived in Wellington by tho Patceua last evening. Mr. H. W. Bishop, S.M., of Christ-, church, is a passenger for Wellington by tho'Wahine, which arrives this ingThe funeral of the late Mr. J. L. Kimbell took place at the Roman Catholic Cemetery in Mount Street .yesterday morning. A Solemn Requiem Mass was celebrated at the Sacrcd Heart Basilica, Hill Street, by the Rev. Father Kimbell, S.lf., son of tho deceased, in the presence of a large congregation. Tho Very Rev. Father HicUson was Deacon, the Rov. Father Tymons was Sub-Deacon, and tho Rev. Father Hurley was Master of Coremonies. His Grace Archbishop O'Sliea assisted in, the sanctuary, and after the Mass performed tho Absolution. The music was rendered in parts by a choir from St. Patrick's College, conducted by tho Very Rov. Dr. Kennedy, and by tiie Sisters of Mercy and pupilb. The l?ov. Father. Kimbell officiated at tho graveside.

A well-known resident of Hokitika, Mr. William Duncan, died there early yesterday morning. Mr. Duncan was ijorn seventy years ago at Errol, in Perthshire, and was in the service of the Union Bank of Australia in London, Melbourne, and Hokitika. In 1879 ho retired from tho position of manager of. tho bank's brancli at _ Hokitika, and started in business oil his own account. Ho was Deputy Offidial Assignee at Hokitika, manager df the- local Savings Bank, agent for the Public Trustee, chairman of tho Benevolent Institution,, secretary of the Gas Company, and tho holder of various other local positions. In 1871 ho married a daughter of Mr. James Potrie, of Hokitika, and is survived by Mrs. Duncan and two married daughters.

Mr. A. Hume Ford, editor of the " Mid-Pacifio Magazine," left by the ferry steamer for tho South last evening. After a few days in Christchurch lie intends to proceed on to Duncdin and thcnce to,Hobart, Melbourne, and Sydney. The Rev. J; G. Cffapman has been invitod by the unanimous vote of tho Board of Management of tho Taranaki Street Methodist Circuit to remain in tho circuit for a fourth year, and has heartily accepted tho invitation. The Rev. W. S. Potter and the Rev. J. H. White have also been invited to remain a second year. The Mataura Presbytery yesterday nominated the Rev. Mr. Grant, of Dannevirke, as moderator for tho next Presbyterian General Assembly—Presß Association. . Mr. G. Carson, delegate to the Reform League Conference, and Mr. F. Moore left Wellington on their return to Wanganui yesterday. Among the arrivals at tho Grand Hotel yesterday were: —Mr. C. Schwab (Niagara Falls), Mr. Frank L. Taylor (London), Mr. L. do Schryver (Auckland), Mr. W. Hay (Owen Sound), Mr. Alfred Lunn (Auckland), and Mr. Air. A. Allen (Auckland). Guests at tho Empire Hotel yesterday included: —Messrs. Geo.
