The Mount Cook Motor Company's four-ton 40 horse-power motor-lorry, made its first businoss trip to-day, taking 3J tons of timber and stores to tho now Hermitage. Leaving Fairlio at 7.20 a.m., it covered tho 90 miles by 6 p.m. Though tho road is not in good order yet, men are now at work fiting it for the tourist season, beginning next month. Good progress is being mado with the new Hermitage building, and it is anticipated Hiat it will be-quite ready for occupation, by Christmas. CIFT HOUSE BURNED. Auckland, October 6. A fir© at' Grey Lynn on Saturday night gutted a six-roomed house owned and occupied by a widow, Mrs. W. Rogers. Tlio building wa£ insured for £250 in tho State Office, and tho furniture for £100 in tlio Phoenix Office. Mrs. Rogers and lier family wore left destitute through' her husband being killed by boing thrown from a cart ten years ago. Money was collected and a bouso presented to Mrs. Rogers. NATIONAL APPLE SHOW. Kelson, October 0. At tho annual mooting of the Nelson District Fruitgrowers' Association, it was decided to tako steps to inaugurate a national apple show on the lines followed at tho American fruit fairs. This is to bo hold annually in different centres. A committee was appointed 1 to communicate with tho associations and deal witli preliminary arrangements. HAWERA FIRE. ' Hawcra, October 6. A nine-roomed residence, owned ond occupied by Mr. O. C. Woods, farmer, was completely -destroye'd by fire on Saturday night. Tho building was insured for £400 in tlio Phoenix Office. The furniture was not insured. BRIEF MENTION. Wanganul, October 6. Exports from Wanganui for the September quarter show an increase of £22,000 over tlio corresponding period' of last year. Nelson, October 6. Several minor shocks of earthquake, ' 0110 fairly severe, were folt here at ] a..m. Reefton, October 3. A house at Grey Road, owned and occupied by Aaron Carnes, was burnod down at midday. The loss was' a good deal over the insurance. A risk of £100 was held by the State office.
