THE HUTT VALLEY GAS.
SPECIAL REPORT. Tho much-discussed question of extension of tho existing gas agreement botweou tho Hutt and Petono Borough Councils was revived at a special mooting of tho liutt Council last evening, when a'report was received from a gas engineer, specially engaged by tho couiir cil, on tlie reticulation at Lower Hutt, together with recommendations for ira* proving tho gas supply. Tho Report. Tho report stated that an tion of the pressure records at the timo of maximum consumption gave tho following pressures:—At the outlet of. tho station motor there was a_ 2.G-incli water prossuro. At tho junction, with White's Lino 2.25-inch water pressure (loss U.25in.); eajt side of Hutt Bridge, 2.05 in. water pressure (loss 0.2 in.); Town Hall (on 4in. main), I.4in. wator prossuro (loss O.Goin.) The record towards tho end of tho pipe on tho Slain Road was l.Oin. (loss 0.4 in.). It therefore could bo taken that these p.ipos wero free from stoppages, and that tho poor supply of gas, after tho 'Hutt ltiver was crossed, was due to the gasmains , being inadequate lor the work'' which they had to do at the time of maximum consumption. If the Gin. main were extended from where it now elided at the Hutt Bridge; past the Town Hall, to, say, King's llo'ad, it would be found that tho pressure would ba increased considerably all round. With 1 modem gas appliances, such as incan< descent burners, cookers, and gas fires, it is impossible to get eflioienoy unless there is a minimum pressure of 2.oin. at tho consumer's meter, and to obtain this a larger supply of gas must ba provided. Course Rooommendad. There aro four methods of increasing the supply of gaß, stated the report:— (1) Increasing the size of the trunk • mains. (2) Erecting a district gasholder. (3) Boosting tho existing mains by means of a pressure raiser. (4) Installing a compressor and a small trunk main, Tho engineer recommended that the most suitable method of improving the -supply was No. 3 method, the vantages being that it was the;, cheapest and also tho freest from complications. The Discussion. The borough engineer, in the course, of his explanation on tho m'attor, stated that tho cost of the suggestions as set?,, out in No. 3 method would be £750. The Mayor later movod that tlw council adopt the engineer's isuggestion in regard to method No. 3, and that tho Pctono Borough Council be asked to contribute £250 for tho second booster, any balance of moneys to bo allowed to tho Hutt . Borough Council for the con-i struction of the (Jin. main to King 8 Road. Tho resolution is to be cmbodioa' ' in tho proposed agreement. _ The resolution was carried unanimously.
