Hood has been compelled by ill-hoalth to retire from tho position of Inspector of Factories for tho Auckland djstrict. Air. J. Hollows, who has been Inspector of Factories at Dunedin for tho past five years, has been;transferred to Auckland to succeed Mr. Hood. Mr. Harold Ashton, one of tho bestknown managers in the theatrical business iu Australia, who, for oyer thirty years, haß boen associated with J. C. Williamson's organisation as business manager, has been appointed by the firm thoir director in South Africa, in connection with the exteusion of their enterprises to that country. Mr. Ashton lias been on a visit to America, and on receipt of a cable message from the Melbourne office, immediately sailed for South Africa to take up his dutios. On Friday afternoon the musical societies of Wellington aro giving an "at home" in tho Town Hall Concert Chamber to Madame Clara Butt and _ Mr. Kennerley Rumford, the distinguished singers. W. H. Bennett has boen elected a life-member of' the Wellington Builders' and Contractors' Association. Johnston and Co., whose hip was broken through a collision between his. dogcart and a tracer's van, will probably be able to leavo tho Davis Street Hospital next week. Mr. C. F. Hill, statioumaster at-Ha-wcra, is resigning from tho service in order to enter into private business, as from the end of tho present month. Mr. Hill has been 30 years in the Department, 18 of which havo beon spent in Hawora, in two different periods. Before entering upon his new commercial spliore, Mr. Hill will spend a couplo of months' holiday in Australia. His successor has not yet been' appointed. Mr. and Mrs. H. Cantle, who are; leaving Opunako after ten years' residence in that.township, were ou Wednesday evening entertained by the residents of tho district, at a very largelyattended social in the Town Hall. Mrs. Oantle was the recipient of a suitablyinscribed silver tea service and tray. Mr. George William Barford, of the Railway Department, who took suddenly ill on Saturday morning, died at tho Wellington Hospital, after an operation, early on Sunday morning, at the ago of 51. He was a son of the lato Mr. James Barford, farmer, of Inglewood, and was for many years postmaster. at Brunner and Waitara. Resigning from tho postal service, Mr. Barford went to South Africa, but subsequently returned and joined, the signalling branch of tho Railway Department. On Saturday he was to have commenced holiday leave prior to retiring from tlio Civil Service to go into business on his own account at To Kuiti. _ He was a Fast Master of tlio Masonic Lodge at Waitara, and at the time of his death was a member of Lodge Tutanekai, and also held office on the Finance CommitTho Rev. Jasper Smyth, who has been m charge of tho Lincoln parish (which includes St. Mary's, Springston) for the past ten years, was met at tho Springston Hall on Thursday evening by tho parishioners and friends, including representatives of all denominations, and prosented with a purse of sovereigns. Tho recipient has just concluded his jubilee as a minister of tho Anglican Church. Mr. J. W. Hastings (Mount Vornon) and Mr. Hugh O. Baird (Hastings) arrived at the .Grand Hotel yesterday.
