■ : —• i DEPUTATION TO THE MINISTER. A deputation from Waiuku waited upon the Minister of Public Works (Hon. W. Fraser) yesterday morning in reference to tho proposed railway to connect Waiuku with tho main railway system. Tho deputation, which was introduced hy tho Hen. AY. F. Massey as member for the district, consisted of Messrs. S. T. Rossiter, A. M. Barriball, L. F. Shakespeare, J. H. Herrold and Schlaepfor. _ Tho deputation having urged tlio importance of the lino tho Minister explained tho position in regard to tho line. A trial and survey, he -said, had already been mado from AVaiuku to Putumalioe, and two alternative lines had already boon surveyed—ono to Paerata. and tho other to Pukekohe. Another survoy'of an intermediate route was now being mado in order to seo whether it was possible to shorten the distance and to avoid cutting up tho sections of land-owners in an injurious manner. It was an important question, he said, in putting a railway. through a settled district .to secure that the property of settlors was affected as littlo. as possiblo. Before, tho final survoy was mado all this information would bo in the possession of the Department. As,to the financial provision for tho line ho could givo 110 definite statement until the Public AA r orks Statement was brought down. There wero many other lines whoso claims had to bo considered, but ho assured the deputation that tho AA r aiuku lino would not bo forgotten, and that ho hoped to bo ablo to make some pro-_ vision for the line.
